Coffee Ends Mixed
Arabica futures settled lower today in session with more activity than previous one this week. The active March contract closed 275 points or 1.48% lower at 182.80 cents a pound. Prices lost 2.9 % during the week. A large number of selling stop orders were triggered as the market broke the 185.00 support level. Short term specs had been selling the market as they noticed that prices failed to break through the resistance level. Speculative selling was also encouraged by the continued deterioration of the active Mar/May switch that today lost additional 30 points to end at 1.70 cents. The structure trade up to 2.70 at the start of the week. Conditions for the Brazil crop appear to improve as moderate to heavy rains were recorded for most of the coffee belt yesterday, and a similar pattern is expected for next week. There have been reports that earlier in the season there were high rates of flower abortion, which could negatively impact yields. The market expects new crop estimates from various firms in the coming weeks, which should give us a better idea of the size of the crop. Certified stocks were unchanged today at 253,144 bags, remaining near 19-year lows. Pending grading added 4,285 bags (BR 3,200; HO 825; MEX 260) to 16,901 bags. No grading was done today.
COT (CIT) Non-commercials increased long position by 689 lots to 48,768 lots long and increased their short position by 271 lots to 26,212 lots short, with a net long position of 22,556 lots in the week to January 2nd.
Robusta futures closed higher today, with the March position $9 higher at $ 2795 per ton. Prices were lower early following weakness in the Arabica market, however recovered as the speculative community opted to cover shorts encouraged by the underlying fundamental sentiment that is dominantly bullish on expectations of lower supplies and firm demand.
