Colombia’s Coffee Imports Slump In January-October
Coffee Network (Bogota)-After importing a record high of 2.377 million bags of 60-kg in 2022, up 38.6% on year, Colombian coffee imports decreased in quantity and value in January-October, according to figures from the ministry of commerce.
Colombia imported 1.301 million bags of 60-kg in January-October, down from 1.844 million bags of 60-kg in the same period in 2022, according to official figures from the ministry of commerce obtained by Coffee Network.
In tonnes, Colombia imported 78,062 tonnes, down from 110,660 tonnes in the same period in 2023.
Coffee imports were worth $226.3 million in January-October, down from $379 million in the same period in 2022, the commerce ministry said.
The new general manager of the coffee growers federation has said Colombia must consume more locally-produced coffee, and resort less on imported coffee.
Colombia, the world’s-largest producer of high-quality Arabica beans, resort on higher imports from neighboring nations as it exports all its high-quality coffee. Colombia also imports coffee to supply the local market because of a shortage of low-quality coffee produced nationally.
Colombia exports all its high-quality Arabica beans, but it used to leave coffee affected by diseases such as broca worms or roya fungus for local consumption. However, in 2015, the coffee growers’ federation lifted a ban that had forbidden exporting low-grade beans. As a result, there was no leftovers of low-grade beans for the local industry, promoting the increase of imports.
Brazil was the largest supplier of coffee in 2023, according to Cecafe figures. Brazil exported to Colombia 1.162 million bags in 2023, down from 1.723 million in 2022.
Colombia imported 2.377 million bags of 60-kg in 2022, up from 1.715 million bags in the same period last year, resulting in all-time record high,
In tonnes, Colombia imported 142,651 tonnes in January-December 2022, up from 102,900 tonnes in 2021, the ministry of commerce told Coffee Network.
If Colombia maintains monthly coffee imports of 130,036 bags, it will likely import around 1.56 million bags in 2022, according to Coffee Network calculations.
Colombia imported 102,900 tonnes of coffee in 2021, equivalent to 1.715 million bags of 60-kg, up from 63,400 tonnes in 2020, official government figures showed.
Local Coffee consumption falls
In November, preliminary domestic consumption was estimated at 185,000 bags, a level 1.7% lower than that seen in the same month last year. For its part, final consumption in October presented a negative variation of 2.3% compared to October 2022. On the other hand, consumption in the accumulated year to date is at 2.2 million bags, 3.5% less than the accumulated from the period Dec-21 to Nov-22, the coffee growers federation said.
