Cocoa Project in Cesar Colombia Begins to Bear Fruits after Program
Commodities Network (Bogota)- An agro-environmental project that implements cocoa agroforestry systems from mid-2022 has begun to bear fruits in the Caribbean province of Cesar.
The project, which benefits 87 peasant families of the Association of Producers and Cocoa Marketers - Cacaoriente, aims to improve the conditions of life of cocoa producers in the vicinity of the Serranía del Perijá, through strengthening their technical and socio-business capabilities, as well as the implementation of sustainable practices that contribute to the conservation of forests and adaptation to climate change.
The cocoa producers has established 87 hectares of cocoa under agroforestry systems, which they combine with timber and fruit trees, generating additional income and diversifying production.
The program also delivered canopies for grain drying, which guarantee better
product quality and greater added value in the market.
The program also planted 39,300 cocoa trees and 3,450 timber trees, which contribute to the recovery of plant cover and the protection of water resources in the surroundings of the Serranía del Perijá.
In addition, it strengthened the leadership of women in the productive process and organizational, increasing their empowerment and participation in decision-making decisions.
A delegation recently met the cocoa plantations with the participation of representatives of cocoa association Cacaoriente, Colombia’s largest cocoa company Nacional de Chocolates, its commercial ally, and Prodesarrollo, the executor of the project, who shared their experiences, challenges and learnings after 18 months of implementation.
Likewise, the delegation toured some properties of those benefited by the project to observe first-hand the results obtained so far.
The program has been funded with funds from the Sustainable Colombia Program and the Inter-American Development Bank. The plantations are located in the municipality of La Paz, Cesar.
The Nacional de Chocolates company last year alone bought 12 tons of cocoa from Medialuna and San José de Oriente, two townships of La Paz.
The Program allocates around COP900 million ($230,800) that has been invested in support technical and useful supplies and tools for the establishment, rehabilitation or renewal of crops.
The cocoa project is one of the 200 projects of the Sustainable Colombia Program, an initiative of the Nation and the IDB to promote comprehensive and sustainable rural development in municipalities affected by the armed conflict, through the generation of opportunities economic, social and environmental for rural communities.
