Bullion Outlook 2025 – The Devil in the Detail

Gold and silver markets are awash with activity at the start of 2025. Daniel Marburger, Managing Director of StoneX Bullion explores trends in the precious metals bullion market.

Key Takeaways

  • Gold is thriving as a safe haven asset, driven by geopolitical instability, inflation, and central bank buying
  • Silver is demonstrating significant potential despite its volatility
  • Bitcoin and gold complement each other in modern portfolios

Gold is Showing Resilience Amid Uncertainty

Marburger notes that gold continues to stand tall as a safe haven for investors, and risk factors such as inflation, geopolitical instability, and the ongoing potential for conflict escalation all contribute to fertile ground for gold prices to remain resilient. He adds that central bank activity has also played a major role in shaping gold’s price trajectory. Central banks, which were sellers before the 2008 financial crisis, have been consistent buyers since then, up to the present day. In his opinion, this trend underscores an underlying confidence in gold as a strategic reserve asset, bolstering its long-term outlook.

Silver is the “Little Devil” with Big Potential

Silver has an equally intriguing outlook as gold, according to Marburger. Playfully dubbed the “little devil” due to its erratic price movements, he observes that silver has shown significant promise, almost doubling in price over the previous five years. Despite volatility, he considers silver to remain closely aligned with gold’s performance, presenting a compelling diversification option for bullion investors.

Platinum and Palladium – The Niche Players with Industry Ties

Platinum and palladium, while less prominent in retail investment portfolios, are still significant metals due to industrial demand. Marburger highlights that while priced lower than gold, their applications in manufacturing and technology ensure consistent demand and are considered a diversification option for bullion investors.

The Unlikely Partnership Between Bitcoin and Gold

Bitcoin, in Marburger’s opinion, is emerging as an unexpected bedfellow of gold for investors looking to protect against instability. He believes that where gold is seen as a stable safe haven, Bitcoin’s limited supply and high volatility have created a new dynamic for investors looking to diversify away from traditional risk. While not immediately obvious, he feels that Bitcoin and gold often complement each other, offering a mix of digital innovation and tangible security.

While for many, Bitcoin is considered a ‘risk-on’ asset rather than a stabilizing force, he feels that it is worth remembering that its journey is in its infancy compared to gold’s millennia-long track record and the role it plays in portfolios of the future remains an open question.

What Are the Key Risks to Precious Metals?

The key risks to the precious metal markets, in Marburger’s view, include a reduction in money printing by central banks, waning inflation, and a de-escalation of geo-political tensions. These factors will affect gold and silver prices, but the broader economic and political landscape suggests that these challenges are unlikely to disappear in the near- term. For investors, he believes this underscores the importance of maintaining a balanced portfolio that includes both traditional diversification assets like gold and silver alongside emerging opportunities like cryptocurrency.

What is the Long-Term Outlook for Bullion?

Marburger believes that the emerging relationship between precious metals and digital assets will continue to evolve, offering unique opportunities and challenges for investors. Irrespective of an investor preference for one asset over the other, he envisions it becoming increasingly important to understand the relationship dynamics between the two in order to make informed decisions.
