All Major Roadways From Interior to the Coast In Colombia Brought to a stop, Hits Coffee

Bogota (Coffee Network) – A truckers’ strike across Colombia is starting to impact coffee exports as major roads from the interior of the country to Caribbean and Pacific ports are fully blocked, while blockades are preventing the arrival of pickers as the main harvest in this Andean nation that begins to be collected.

Roads to the Pacific ports of Buenaventura are blocked since yesterday. Although the coffee exporters association Asoexport told Coffee Network yesterday that coffee continues to exit through Buenventura, that came to a stop after truckers from the Valle del Cauca province joined the national truckers’ strike.  Blockades to Buenaventura  have dire effects on coffee shipments as 60% of Colombian coffee is exported through Pacific terminals.

Coffee exporters from the southern departments of Narino, Valle del Cauca and  Cauca as well as the central provinces of regions Huila, Caldas, Risaralda, Quindio prefer Buenaventura because it takes five hours to get there, compared to two or three days if it were exported through Cartagena.

Juan Alvaro Arboleda a coffee grower from Antioquia, the country’s second largest coffee-producing province, beans are being picked up in the traditional coffee belt known as Eje Cafetero, which comprises the provinces of Caldas, Risaralda and Quindio.

The coffee thresher of Armenia is running short of coffee to thrsher beans, Faber Buitrago, a coffee leader in Quindio said.

In Antioquia, where the main harvest is getting ready to pick, the road blockades are preventing the arrival of pickers, Arboleda said.

“For us, the harvest has not started yet. But we should have been receiving pickers by now. The personnel for the harvest is not arriving. This is a very serious situation,” Arboleda said.

The roads of the Southeast of Antioquia, the largest coffee-producing area, with Caribbean are blocked.

In Antioquia, there are four active blockades. The first one is in Bello, on the Medellín-Bogotá highway. Another one is in the jurisdiction of Medellín, due to a concentration on the dual carriageway in both directions of the Medellín-Alto de Palmas highway. Two others are in Caldas: one is a total blockade on the La Pintada-Medellín highway, in the Y de Primavera sector.

The most seriously affected provinces by the truckers’ strike are the provinces of Santander, Norte de Santander, Cundinamarca and Meta, the government has said.

President Gustavo Petro raised diesel prices to about COP2,000 per gallon ($0.5) ending subsidies on diesel. The government scrapped plans to increase diesel prices by up to COP6,000 per gallon

The measure to increase diesel prices comes after Petro also ended the subsidy on gasoline and diesel. This measure is part of a series of efforts by Petro to remedy the economic deficits inherited from predecessors.  Managing the state fund, which subsidizes the difference between international costs and domestic fuel prices, has been a major challenge. With a current deficit of around COP10 trillion pesos, the need to financially stabilize this fund is more pressing than ever. But that is lower than the COP33 trillion when Petro started his presidency in August 2022.
