Argentina's investors are moving away from short-term arbitrage and toward duration and company fundamentals as peso and rates volatility fades. Many, however, are holding back on bigger commitments until the 2027 election shows if the current policy direction continues. For years, survival in Argentine markets meant trading around inflation, multiple exchange rates and sudden policy swings, often over a horizon of days. That habit is starting to break, and why it matters goes well beyond Buenos Aires, because it shapes how capital flows into Argentine bonds, equities and credit.
Philip Smith, StoneX Group Chief Executive, sat down in Buenos Aires with Iair Nadel, StoneX Argentina Chief Executive Officer, Lucio Arrocha, StoneX Argentina Strategist, and Joaquin Gonzalez, StoneX Argentina Head Trader, to reflect on the companies 20 years of operations in the country.
Key Themes from the Discussion
Argentine clients now ask about duration and company fundamentals instead of daily FX and rates arbitrage.
Remaining exchange controls keep Argentina's investor mindset shift incomplete, according to the StoneX Argentina trading desk.
Argentina's bond market is pricing the 2027 election, holding back longer-term commitments from local and foreign investors.

Argentina's Investors Trade Daily Arbitrage for Duration
"Short term, not U.S. or UK short term, which are maybe months or years. Argentinian short term is days," says Nadel, describing how Argentine clients used to approach the market. Argentina's lower volatility in FX and local rates has changed that conversation, with Gonzalez noting that clients once constantly covered positions against FX, rates and inflation and are now analyzing durations and company fundamentals in the energy, mining and banking sectors. Nadel compares the change to football, a move from tactical to strategic play. For investors, Argentine market activity is increasingly driven by balance sheets and time horizons rather than the next arbitrage between exchange rates.
Argentina's Exchange Controls Keep the Investor Shift Unfinished
Argentina's investor shift toward duration remains incomplete because exchange controls and other restrictions are still in place. Gonzalez describes the local mindset as changing, then adds that "it's not fully changed yet because we have a lot of constraints of restrictions yet". Notably, Argentina's banking sector has yet to deliver on the credit side, in a country where credit relative to GDP is very low. As a result, the opportunity in Argentine credit and longer-dated assets depends heavily on how and when those controls are eased.
Argentina's 2027 Election Holds Back Longer-Term Commitments
Argentina's bond market is already pricing the 2027 election, with Nadel pointing to a wide spread between debt maturing before the vote and debt maturing after it. Gonzalez says clients are waiting for the election, and that Argentina's longer-dated bond yields have risen as the market grows more nervous about the outcome. The election is a test of the economy as well as of politics. According to Arrocha, what matters is "not only political terms, also in economic terms, if they can materialize stability into growth".
