Cecafé Launches Landing Page about EUDR and Coffees in Brazil

CoffeeNetwork (New York) - The Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé) has just launched a landing page on the European Union's Regulation for Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR). The objective is to facilitate the understanding of the new rules and their implications for the coffee trade in Brazil, through, for example, questions and answers aimed at producers, exporters and importers.

The European Union is the main importing bloc of coffees from Brazil, accounting for 47.3% of exports of the product from January to July 2024. With the EUDR becoming stricter as of next year, promoting the import and sale of deforestation-free products, as part of the European Green Deal to combat climate change, Cecafé seeks to clarify the points involved in this new legislation.

The EUDR imposes, for example, the obligation to provide information on the geolocations of the properties where the coffee originated and that European companies carry out due diligence along their supply chains to ensure that products originating from deforested areas, as of December 31, 2020, are not imported and marketed in European territory.

"Although there are many challenges with the new European regulation, Brazil has been making efforts, through export trade, to meet the new regulations and the demand of the European bloc, ensuring the supply of our importers in this important market by offering coffees of different qualities and produced in a sustainable way, with respect for the environment and people", highlights the general director of Cecafé, Marcos Matos.

Cecafé's Sustainability Director, Silvia Pizzol, adds that bringing more transparency to the good socio-environmental practices adopted in the country's coffee regions is an opportunity to demonstrate to the world that coffees from Brazil are and are at the forefront of global sustainability, considering their three dimensions: environmental, social and economic.

"Cecafé leads the challenge of defending Brazilian coffee abroad and promoting domestic awareness, through informative and instructive digital campaigns on the new European Union regulation, bringing knowledge and clarification to Brazilian coffee producers and exporters. This communication initiative also aims to demonstrate to European importers the platform adopted by the export trade and the procedures carried out in Brazil to comply with the EUDR", he comments.

To support the socio-environmental due diligence processes carried out by exporting companies, the website presents the partnership that Cecafé has with Serasa Experian, and through the Smart ESG platform, Brazilian exporters can verify and monitor socio-environmental information of rural properties, identifying those that meet the requirements of the European regulation, in addition to extracting geolocation data.

Eduardo Heron, technical director of Cecafé, recalls that the EUDR applies only to European economic operators, such as importers and traders, however, the new import rules of the European Union bring requirements that generate effects for the other links in the chain, including producers and exporters, because the regulation makes it mandatory to provide information on the geolocations of the properties in which the coffee originated.

"This is information that should accompany coffee throughout its marketing chain. That is why our website presents the Cecafé-Serasa Experian partnership, which currently has more than 50 exporting companies and cooperatives, responsible for almost all coffee shipments to the EU, which apply technology to evaluate and generate evidence on the compliance of beans to be exported to the European bloc under the EUDR rules", Concludes.

Cecafé's new landing page, which brings the main information that producers, exporters and importers need to know about the EUDR, in addition to showing how Brazil has been working to meet the obligations of the new regulation and ensure supply to the EU, can be accessed in www.cecafe.com.br/eudr.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 11

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.
