Colombia’s Coffee Imports Totaled 1.715 Million bags IN 2021: Commerce Ministry

Bogota (Coffee Network ) – Colombia imported  1.715 million bags of 60-kg in 2021, slightly higher than the 1.6 million assessment of Coffee Network,  reaching a new all-time historic record, which reflects lower output and a shortage of low-quality coffee produced nationally.

Colombia, the world’s-largest producer of high-quality Arabica beans, imported 1.715 million bags of 60-kg last year, twice as much as the 1.056 million bags in 2020, according to official figures from the ministry of commerce and industry released to Coffee Network.

In tonnes, Colombia imported 102,900 tonnes last year, up from 63,400 tonnes in 2020.

Colombia paid US$203 million for the coffee imported in 2021, up from  US$101 million (CIF) in 2020.

Colombia resorted on higher imports from neighboring nations as national coffee production slumped to 12.6 million bags in 2021, down from around 14 million bags per year for the past six previous years.  Colombia also imports coffee to supply the local market because of a shortage of low-quality coffee produced nationally.

Colombia exports all its high-quality Arabica beans, but it used to leave coffee affected by diseases such as broca worms or roya fungus for local consumption. However, in 2015, the coffee growers’ federation lifted a ban that had forbidden exporting low-grade beans. As a result, there was no leftovers of low-grade beans for the local industry, promoting the increase of imports.

Brazil was the largest supplier of coffee. Colombia imported 1.163 million bags of coffee from Brazil, up 33.4% from the  871,158 bags in 2020, according to official figures from the Brazilian coffee exporters group Cecafe.

Peru, which was historically the main exporter of coffee to Colombia, was displaced to the second place. Peru exported 367,761 bags of 60-kg in 2021, up 24.4% on year when it shipped 295,430 bags, according to the Peruvian coffee and cocoa chamber.

Honduras topped almost 80,000 bags in 2021, according to information provided by the Honduras coffee institute IHcafe.

Colombia also imported 36,737 bags of 60-kg of Ecuadorean Robusta coffee, twice as much as the 16,580 bags of 60-kg imported from Ecuador in 2020, according to information provided by the coffee body Anecafe.

Imports of coffee also came expensive as local currency experienced a strong depreciation sending the peso above COP4,000 pesos to the dollar at some point last year. The Colombian peso ended at COP3,981.16 last year, compared with COP3,432.50 at the end of 2020.

Imports of low-grade Arabica coffee and Robusta beans have been growing by leaps and bounds.

In 2018, Colombia imported 998,460 bags of 60-kg, twice as much as the 440,000 60-kg recorded in 2017, according of the country’s tax office (DIAN).

After reaching record imports in 2012, the volume of coffee purchases from overseas fell to 606,500 60-kg bags in 2013, 351,000 60-kg bags in 2014 and 218,000 60-kg bags in 2015, according to figures provided by FNC.

Imports are also rising amid increased local coffee consumption. Coffee consumption is expected to increase to 2.8/kg per capita in 2021, up from previous 2.3kg/ per capita, according to the coffee growers federation

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
