Colombia’s Coffee Inventories in September Fall on Month, Rise on YearFNC

Bogota (Coffee Network)- Coffee inventories in Colombia decreased by 3.7% in September on month, and stood at 1.154 million bags, down from 1.202 million bags in August, the coffee growers federation said.

Coffee inventories of 1.15 million bags is 19.2% higher than those observed in September 2022 when they were about 929,000 bags , according to a federation chart.

In July, inventories stood at 1.214 million bags, compared with 1.245 million in June. In May, coffee stockpiles were 1.120 million, while in Abril they stood at 1.190 million, the lowest level reported so far 2023.

In March, coffee inventories were 1.34 million bags, compared with 1.412 million in February, the highest level in 2023. In January, they stood at 1.307 in January, FNC said.

In September, preliminary domestic consumption was estimated at 175,000 bags, a 3.4% lower than that seen in the same month last year. For his part, the definitive consumption in August presented a negative variation of 3.6% with compared to August 2022. On the other hand, consumption in its accumulated year to date is at 2.2 million bags, 3.9% less than the period Oct-21 to Sep-22.

Meanwhile, preliminary imports are estimated to fall by 57.8% compared to the final data for the same month of the previous year. InRegarding the accumulated 12 months, preliminary imports were 1.1% lower than the final data for the same period of the previous year to stand at 2.098 million bags.

The coffee growers federation has not revealed exports for August, but shipments most likely will come decimated as all roasters report low consumption/demand. They said coffee consumption has not yet recovered pre-pandemic levels.

Although the coffee growers federation does not say why consumption is falling, high prices and a falling purchasing power is to blame for the situation. Prices of coffee for local consumption in Colombia have grown above inflation since June 2021 through June 2023, reaching an annual record high of 52.69% as of December 2022, according to the consumer knowledge group Raddar.

In June 2021-June 2023, coffee prices in Colombia grew 28.41%, twice as much as inflation, Raddar explains. Yet in June 2021-December 2022 coffee prices had grown 52.7%, discouraging consumers on buying coffee.
