Colombia’s Coffee Plantations Recorded Lower Rainfall in March, April Showers Set To Increase

Bogota (Coffee Network) – For April, Colombia’s rainfall is expected to remain within historical ranges across much of Colombia’s coffee-growing regions. This month is part of the first major wet season of the year and shows an increase in precipitation compared to March. It also corresponds to the wet period in the Northern, Eastern, and Central regions, while in the Southern coffee region the rainy season continues, the coffee research department Cenicafe said.

For May 2026, rainfall conditions are expected to vary by region. A decrease in precipitation is anticipated across large areas of Bolívar, Cesar, Magdalena, Antioquia, Caldas, Risaralda, Valle del Cauca, Tolima, Casanare, Boyacá, Cauca, and Nariño. In contrast, localized areas in La Guajira, Cesar, Norte de Santander, Santander, Caldas, Cauca, Huila, Tolima, and Cundinamarca may experience above-normal rainfall.

Between June and August 2026, there is a 62% probability that an El Niño event will develop, which could persist at least through the end of the year, Cenicafe added citing international weather centers.

In general terms, rainfall in May is expected to increase compared to April in the Central and Northern regions, reinforcing the wet season in the North, East, and Center. However, in the Southern coffee region, precipitation is expected to begin decreasing compared to the previous month.

May marks the onset of the rainy season across much of the coffee-growing region, particularly in the Central and Southern areas. In regions such as Casanare and Arauca, rainfall is expected to increase significantly compared to April.

Monthly rainfall amounts, measured in millimeters (mm), are distributed as follows:

  • More than 300 mm: southeastern Antioquia.
  • Between 150 and 300 mm: central Norte de Santander, southern Santander, Antioquia, Boyacá, Casanare, and Arauca.
  • Between 50 and 150 mm: La Guajira, Magdalena, Cesar, and northern Norte de Santander and Santander.

Regarding historical averages at weather stations in the Northern region, the following values are recorded:

  • Pueblo Bello (Cesar): 168 mm
  • La Victoria (Magdalena): 146 mm
  • San Antonio (Santander): 144 mm
  • Blonay (Norte de Santander): 171 mm

Regarding current climate conditions, sea surface temperatures in the central equatorial Pacific remain below average, and the atmosphere still reflects La Niña characteristics. However, neutral conditions are expected for the March–May 2026 period.

March Rainfall

But coffee plantations in Colombia have been pelted since the beginning of the year because of cold fronts coming from the north.

Yet rainfall decreased across Colombia’s main coffee-growing regions in March, according to the coffee research institute Cenicafé.

At the Manuel Mallarino coffee station in the department of Valle del Cauca, was 120mm in March, down from 337mm of rainfall was recorded in February, and in line the historical average of 147mm for the month, a Cenicafé report showed.

The El Tambo station in Cauca — the country’s fourth-largest coffee-producing department — recorded 188mm of rainfall in March, down from 383mm of rainfall in February, compared with a historical March average of 202mm.

In Huila, the coffee weather station Jorge Villamil recorded 92mm of rainfall in March, down from the historic average of 137mm for previous  months of March.

In Antioquia, the weather station El Rosario recorded 86mm of rainfall in March, down from 192 in previous months of March.

Torrential rains have also delayed the key flowering period in some coffee-growing areas, which could reduce output during the main harvest between October and December. Colombia typically requires strong sunshine and a period of water deficit about eight months before harvest to ensure strong yields.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 11

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.
