UPDATE: Colombia’s Coffee Production Falls 2% in 2025

(Adds details and comments)

Bogotá (Coffee Network) — Colombia, the world’s third-largest coffee producer, harvested 13.678 million 60-kg bags of coffee in 2025, down 2% year-on-year from 13.997 million bags in 2024, the National Federation of Coffee Growers (FNC) said early today.

December output totaled 1.233 million bags, a sharp decline from 1.798 million bags produced in the same month a year earlier.

“This decline does not represent a breaking point, but rather forms part of the natural productive cycle of coffee,” the FNC said.

Outlook: Sharper Decline Ahead

The federation expects a more pronounced drop in production during the first half of the 2025–2026 coffee year (October–March). Output in the October–December quarter fell 29.5% compared with the same period of the previous coffee year, signaling a cyclical adjustment after an exceptionally strong harvest.

Drivers of the Decline

The downturn is primarily attributed to the biennial production cycle of the coffee plant, which naturally alternates between years of higher and lower yields. A strong harvest is typically followed by a softer one, the FNC said.

Adverse weather conditions also played a significant role. Heavy rainfall during the first half of 2025 disrupted flowering and bean development, reducing overall yield potential. The decline extended the trend observed in October and November and reflects the production adjustment expected in the second half of the year.

Colombia’s main harvest, which runs from September to December and accounts for roughly 60% of annual output, was concentrated in Caldas, Risaralda, Quindío, Valle del Cauca, Antioquia, and parts of Huila. .

Additionally, a delay in the first-semester harvest, which pushed volumes into July and August, contributed to the perception of weaker production later in the year.

Exports Edge Higher

Despite lower output, coffee exports rose 7% in 2025. Colombia shipped 13.127 million bags between January and December, up from the previous year.

The FNC outperformed the broader market, increasing exports by 20% to 2.702 million bags, compared with 2.259 million bags in 2024.
Private exporters shipped 10.424 million bags, up 4% from 10.064 million bags a year earlier.

Inventories Increase

Coffee inventories stood at 1.192 million bags in December, up from 1.077 million bags in November.
Of that total, the FNC held 1.007 million bags, while private exporters accounted for 185,000 bags, both higher month-on-month.

Imports Surge

Coffee imports surged to 1.189 million bags in 2025, but no comparative figure was provided for 2024. December imports alone reached 172,000 bags, a 554% increase year-on-year.

Although Colombia is a leading coffee exporter, it imports coffee—mainly from Brazil, Peru, and Vietnam—to meet growing domestic demand and diversify flavor profiles. Most of Colombia’s high-quality arabica is exported, increasing reliance on imported beans for local consumption.

Traders also noted that imports rose sharply from May through November as changes in U.S. tariff structures encouraged the import of Brazilian coffee, which was later re-exported from Colombia to benefit from lower duties. While Brazil led imports early in the year, shipments from Vietnam surged in the second half, according to commerce ministry data.

Consumption Remains Steady

Domestic coffee consumption held firm at 2.273 million bags in 2025, signaling resilient demand despite elevated prices.
