Colombia’s FNC Japan Office Has Allowed to Expand Into Other Asian Nations
Coffee Network (Bgota)- The Colombian coffee growers federation said its office in Japan has allowed to expand its commercial and promotional activities in other countries in the region such as China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Japan is the second market for direct sales of the Federation, the fifth destination for Colombian coffee exports and one of the main clients of the Colombian Freeze-Dried Coffee Factory, Buencafé. Colombia exported 861,000 bags of 60-kg of coffee to Japan in 2021, down from 1.023 million bags in 2020, according to figures from the coffee growers federation.
In 1962, FNC opened its representative office in Tokyo, which today reaches 60 years with outstanding results for Colombian coffee growers.
Colombian coffee exports in 1960 were 41,000 60-kg bags and thanks to the work team of this office, on average, in the last decade, they amount to one million bags of coffee per year.
“As everyone knows, I started very young in this institution from the Commercial Management, which led me to be part of the team in Japan more than 30 years ago, for this reason I have a deep love for this country and today I continue working to represent coffee and the development of culture, accompanying the country to become the third largest consumer of coffee in the world, an effort that belongs to the Federation of Coffee Growers and the roasting industry”, said Roberto Vélez Vallejo, general manager of the FNC.
One of the results of these years of work by the FNC in Japan was the launch of "Emerald Mountain" premium coffee in 1989, initially marketed by Miyako Shokuhin Corporation, currently Capital Corporation, which today continues to generate value for coffee growers both in the segment of specialty coffees, as well as for a key ingredient of the best-selling canned coffee in Japan.
Among the activities that the FNC has carried out to maintain and deepen the relationship with the Japanese industry, are the courses on quality that have been received by more than 200 experts from various companies that sell beverages and roasters, who come to the country to discover experientially what is behind Colombian coffee, an exercise that is currently being replicated with members of the coffee industry in China.
Other achievements to highlight
FNC also launched the Georgia Emerald Mountain Blend coffee in 1994 in partnership with Coca Cola Japan and Mitsubishi. This product has been the number one selling canned coffee in Japan.
It has also created the Japan-Colombia Joint Economic Committee in 1990 to promote trade relations between the two countries, of which the FNC has always been an active part and today is chaired by the general manager, on behalf of Colombia.
Supply of Rainforest certified coffee for Lawson's Machi Café brand, one of the largest convenience store chains in Japan.
Supply of coffee for launching new regional products such as Huila and Valle del Cauca with companies such as Suntory and AGF Ajinomoto.
Alliance with Ogawa since 2003 to offer coffee extract in Japan for the food and beverage industry. Coffee extract supply contract for 1,000 tons per year.
First supply of decaffeinated Swiss Water coffee extract, to the dairy company Maeil Dairies in Korea.
First supply in the history of Colombian soluble coffee, Sensoria technologies in S&R supermarket in the Philippines.
Meanwhile, the Japanese industry is dedicating great efforts to support and encourage sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this scenario, sales of certified, sustainable, and traceable coffees have increased, as well as the implementation of social and sustainable projects in Colombia, in collaboration with Japanese companies such as Mitsubishi, AGF Ajinomoto and Seven Eleven Japan.
Finally, due to the continuous visits to the country by expert coffee makers from Japan, the growing community of baristas has been able to learn first-hand about the variety and wide opportunities offered by micro-lots from all areas of this country, a program undertaken by the Federation to serve specialized market niches, and which has been very well received.
The Colombian National Coffee Fund (FoNC) has secured a US$40 million loan from the Japanese bank Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation.
The resources will be used to exercise the purchase guarantee, the technical assistance service for producers, scientific research and technological development, investments that in turn contribute to the achievement Sustainable Development Objectives, the coffee growers federation

Daily coffee report

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.
