Colombian Growers Getting as Much As COP1.7 million per load of Coffee, Highest level Ever

Coffee Network (Bogota) – Middleman, traders, coffee exporters are paying as much as COP1.7 million pesos, the highest level ever to secure two bags of parchment coffee equivalent to 125kg, reflecting increased internal coffee prices which have risen to record highs.

To secure two bags of parchment coffee equivalent to 125kg, an exporter has to pay 1.7 million Colombian pesos ($440) taking into account the exchange rate and differential on Colombian beans.

The coffee growers federation sets every day a benchmark price to buy beans but that is a reference price as growers usually get a premium for their beans, while others secure premiums based on their certifications. In addition, middlemen also known as “pergamineros” pay a higher price to secure the beans in a very competitive market that has a growing number of international buyers trying to secure Colombian beans.

Coffee grower and exporter Juan Alvaro Arboleda, located in the eastern province of Antioquia—Colombia’s second-largest coffee producing province-, said growers are obtaining COP1.680 million for two bags of parchment coffee today, and most likely tomorrow, they will receive 1.7 million.

The reference price for two bags of parchment coffee stood at COP1.565 million Colombian pesos yesterday. The federation reveals the daily price each day in the afternoons after markets closed.

Coffee growers are pocketing strong gains as average production costs range COP850,000 and COP900,000, according to figures from the coffee growers federation.
Local coffee prices are calculated daily taking into consideration the fluctuations of the Colombian peso to the dollar, international coffee prices and the premium for Colombia coffee.
The Colombian peso has depreciated 10.5% so far 2021, trading today at around COP3,860 at the time of writing.

Colombian local coffee prices have climbed so much in the past weeks propelled by the rise of international coffee prices and the depreciation of the Colombian peso.
In June 2021, coffee prices recorded the eighth consecutive month of increase, triggered by the expectations of reduced supply from some origins in addition to disruptions in trade flows, the International Coffee Organization ICO said recently. The monthly average of the ICO composite indicator reached 141.03 US cents/lb in June 2021, representing an increase of 33.2% from the level of 105.85 US cents/lb recorded in October 2020. This is also the highest monthly average since the level of 145.82 US Cents/lb registered in November 2016. Prices of all four groups of coffee have recorded a substantial increase. Increased activities of non-commercial speculative sector were also recorded in June 2021, as growing net long positions supported price trends upward.

The growers that are benefiting from high local prices are those located in the central province of Tolima, as well as the southern province of Nariño and Cauca and some in Huila, the largest coffee-producing province, which are currently picking their main harvest.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.
