Corn Weekly Report

USDBRL appreciation has been supporting corn prices in Brazil

On the CBOT, the good development of the US crop continues to weigh on prices
  • Bearish Factors
  • Expectation of high stocks at the end of the 23/24 and 24/25 crop years;
  • Good condition of US crops;
  • Harvest progress in Brazil (safrinha) and Argentina.
  • Bullish Factors
  • Delay in the marketing pace in Brazil and the United States;
  • Drought in Ukraine impacting the development of the 24/25 crop.

Last week (07/29-08/02), corn futures depreciated on the Chicago exchange. The September contract ended the period at 386.50 cents/bu, a weekly depreciation of 2%. When considering the continuous price, which refers to the nearby contract, last week's closing price is the lowest since October 2020.

The main factor behind the depreciation was the change in weather outlook for the US agricultural belt. The forecast of hot and dry weather in the second week of August, which caused corn futures to appreciate between August 22 and 26, no longer exists, with models now indicating a wet weather in most regions.

Some other factors also helped in the depreciation. On Monday (29), the USDA update showed 68% of American corn crops in good/excellent conditions, 6 percentage points above the average of the last five years for the period, indicating high productivity. Then, on Thursday (1), StoneX from the United States released its first crop estimate for the 2024/25 season also indicating high productivity: 11.44 ton/ha, against 11.36 in USDA's current forecast. If this productivity materializes, it will be the largest in history and will result in the production of 386.27 million tonnes, a volume that would represent the second largest corn crop in the history of the United States, behind only the 389 million produced in the last cycle.

In addition to the fundamentals of the corn market itself, macroeconomic factors also weighed on the grain depreciation. Last week, the release of weak employment data in the United States triggered fears of a recession in the world's leading economy, a phenomenon that led investors to flee from risky assets and brought the possibility of a contraction in demand for commodities. For the Brazilian corn market, the major consequence of the increase in risk aversion was a new round of devaluation of the Brazilian real. Now, one USD is equivalent to more than BRL 5.75, the highest value since February 2021, increasing the competitiveness of Brazilian exports. Following the USD, corn appreciated on B3 last week, with the contract expiring in September closing the period quoted at BRL 61.83/bag, a weekly appreciation of 1.2%. In general, the USD appreciation has supported the price of corn in Brazil, counterbalancing the increase in supply resulting from the harvest progress. Since July 12, the continuous corn contract in Brazil has appreciated about 10%.

Giving more details about the second crop harvest, the StoneX estimate indicates that it reached 93.2%. In most states, the process is practically over, leaving only the miners, who have so far harvested 45% of the crops.

Another important update made by StoneX last week concerns the crop estimates for Brazil. For the 2023/24 cycle, the figures are practically consolidated, with only a few adjustments being made. In summary, the estimate is 26.058 million tonnes in the 1st crop, 93.553 million in the 2nd, and still 2.191 million in the 3rd, totaling 121.8 million tonnes, the third largest crop in the history of Brazil.

For the 2024/25 season, StoneX released an estimate for the 1st crop. In summary, a significant reduction in acreage was estimated, which would decrease from 3.64 million hectares in 23/24 to 3.4 million hectares, a reduction of 6.7%. The states with the largest estimated cuts are Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Goiás. Decrease in the area of summer corn is not a new phenomenon. Since the late 90s, the planting of this crop in the 2nd semester has been losing ground, mainly to soybean. The annual decrease of 6.7%, however, is more representative and responds to the discouragement of farmers with the current price level.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.

Perspective: Mid-Day Commentary for August 6

August 6 – Stocks remain quietly mixed at midday as both the S&P 500 and Dow Jones remain just below their fresh all-time highs put in yesterday. This is allowing the VIX to cool to a four-week low below the 15.4 mark, reflecting the collective sigh of relief in the market amid largely better than expected U.S. economic data today. The dollar remains quietly in the green in its relatively tight range this week, trading at 99.9 at the time of writing. Treasuries remain elevated but have cooled from their recent peaks, with 30-year yields trading at 5.189%, 10-year yields trading at 4.647%, and 2-year yields trading at 4.229% at midday. Crude oil also remains quietly in the green, with nearby WTI up 2.3% on the day trading near $76.80 and nearby Brent up 2.4% on the day trading near $81.40. The ags remain mixed, with the wheat complex now squarely in the red while corn and soybeans cling to small gains, and the livestock complex largely pushes lower.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.
