Corn ends the week stable after bearish WASDE

25 mmt were added to this year's corn production
  • Bearish factors
  • Large production in Brazil;
  • Record production in the United States;
  • Positive revision in the American acreage.
  • Bullish factors
  • Heated consumption globally;
  • USDA estimates lower stocks for the 2025/26 crop at the global level;
  • Stronger exports in the US.

Weekly overview | Corn futures ended the week near stability. The expiration for December/25 was traded at US¢405.25/bu, a slight drop of 0.1%. The stable performance was surprising, in view of the results presented at the beginning of the week by the USDA. The department reinforced the estimate of a record crop in the United States by adding 26.3 mmt to the country's production. The fact, which was the major highlight of the week, sharply pressured the contracts initially, but a recovery was observed in the following days.

WASDE | In last week's update, the USDA made a substantial revision to the American corn crop that was reflected in two areas. First, an average productivity of 11.85 t/ha was estimated, a record level. A positive revision for this variable was already expected: the crop conditions have remained very good since the beginning of the crop, which had already led agents to prepare for this revision. StoneX, for example, estimated productivity at a number close to that released by the department, of 11.81 t/ha. Secondly – and this was the big surprise of this WASDE – we saw a revision to the acreage that resulted in an increase of 850 thousand hectares to the corn area in the country. The result was a total production of 425.3 million tonnes for the country, the highest result in history, raising the carryout to 53.8 million tonnes, the highest level since 2018/19.

Still, some uncertainty remains in that ending stocks number. Along with adjustments to highlight the supply, the USDA usually brings better prospects for demand. The estimate of exports was revised to 73 mmt (+5 mmt) in the 2025/26 crop year. Even though the North American export market is sharply competitive, reaching this level will be challenging. Furthermore, the country's domestic consumption also underwent a positive revision, reaching 332.25 mmt (+8.8 mmt).

On the international front, in addition to a downward revision in China’s corn imports, the USDA did not make major changes. The Brazilian production for 2024/25 remains at 132 mmt by the department, a number much lower than local estimates have indicated.

CONAB | In addition to the WASDE, last week was also marked by a revision in CONAB's crop estimates. In the August report, Brazilian corn production was revised to 137 mmt, a level closer but still below the 139.4 mmt estimated by StoneX. With this robust production, CONAB raised the estimate of Brazilian corn exports from 36 to 40 mmt this year.

Exports continue to be monitored with caution. Although the harvest of a large safrinha tends to deliver large exportable surpluses, shipments in July were 1 mmt behind last year – and the results of the first week of August also indicate a slowdown in exports. Brazilian corn continues to be less competitive on the international market. However, even with strengthened domestic consumption, exports should be a way to adjust the internal balance in the face of this enormous supply coming from the fields. Thus, a more significant gain in traction of shipments in the coming weeks is not ruled out, if logistical conditions allow.

Brazil | As mentioned, domestic prices remain strong. Last week, the November/25 expiration on B3 closed at R$67.43/bag (-0.3%), while the spot market remained steady in most of the centers monitored by StoneX.ela The sale continues relatively slow, providing greater support for prices around here.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 5

August 5 – U.S. equities markets are on fire this week, with both the Dow Jones and S&P 500 setting new all-time highs yesterday with futures indicating further gains again today; the marketplace remains optimistic over a deal with Iran despite no evidence of such as of yet. Crude oil is working on a lower high and low today but remains slightly on the high side on the session, while the dollar is retreating back towards Monday’s nearly two-month low. The ten-year note is steady-to-lower this morning (though solidly lower so far this month) at 4.605%, while the VIX index continues to rebound into mid-week at almost a 17-point reading this morning.

Perspective: Mid-Day Commentary for August 4

August 4 – The Dow Jones is absolutely piling on gains today, adding a similar number that led to yesterday’s record, with the benchmark index now nearing the 54k-point mark through mid-morning. The S&P also hit a new record, while the NASDAQ is exceeding both those gains on a percentage basis. The marketplace is optimistic on a U.S.-Iran trade deal, though the proposed resolution is still being “circulated between the parties”.
