The StoneX Dairy Team is honored to have been helping the dairy industry with their hedging needs for over 20 years. During this time, we have been thoroughly impressed with the continuous hard work and dedication our nation's producers put into helping feed the world.
We would really like to thank you for the food bounty you continually produce year in and year out. We wish you and your family good health and a well-deserved Happy Thanksgiving!
Class III futures and cheese futures were mixed to slightly lower yesterday amid a weaker spot market. Spot blocks were down 1 cents on a single trade while barrels were down 1.5 cents with no trades but 6 bids unfilled slightly below the market. Class III futures moved no more than 8 cents on either side of unchanged. The fact that futures didn’t push more lower could tell us that the short side is saturated and no one is in a rush to buy futures at the moment given the futures premium to spot. That being said, the last time we saw sub $1.50 barrel cheese was about 1.5 months ago and buyers were eager to step in at those levels. Class III futures volume was lighter than Monday but remained healthy with 1481 contracts trading while cheese traded just 515 contracts.
Spot butter move higher for a second straight session, similar to last week. Prices were up 1.25 cents on 8 trades which lent support to 2024 futures as most months were up more than a cent on light volume with only 151 contracts trading.
The GDT event yesterday produced results weaker than what SGX futures were indicating. Futures were implying a 4.6% increase in the index but the event finished with unchanged even with AMF and WMP prices higher. Futures were indicating a 3% in SMP prices but they finished down 3.8%. Those results, along with a weaker spot market, brought in sell side pressure to CME futures as some contracts through the first have of the year were down more than 2 cents. Futures volume totaled 551 contracts, which is the highest we’ve seen in more than a month. OI increased by 265 contracts. Options trading saw good volume as well with over 785 options traded,

New Zealand milk solids production in October was up 0.9% from last year which is a little weaker than the +1.5% forecast. The pasture growth index was around average during October, but has shifted to well above average during November which has boosted the November and December production forecasts and pulled the full season forecast from -1.3% to -1.0%. While we are officially in an El Nino it has yet to negatively impact pasture growth and production yet. It’s possible we could see the weather deteriorate in December, but some are arguing that we won’t see a negative impact from El Nino until at least January.

Daily CME spot dairy market price summary

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
