CoffeeNetwork (New York) - The Global Coffee Platform (GCP) announced today that eight of its leading members have championed the launch of a new era of collective action in coffee sustainability. The combined contribution of more than $1.5 million marks the first milestone of the organization’s development into “GCP 2.0”, an effort to significantly advance coffee smallholders’ sustainability and prosperity.

“This targeted co-funding by our membership kick-starts our work, catalyzing transformational change around living income, climate adaptation and sustainability for over one million coffee farmers around the world,” announced GCP Executive Director Annette Pensel. “Today, we celebrate the commitment of JDE Peet’s, Melitta Group, Mother Parkers’ Coffee & Tea, Nescafé, Nespresso, ofi (olam food ingredients), Rabobank and Westrock Coffee Company. These companies are taking collective action to the next level to propel coffee sustainability.”

GCP 2.0’s farmer-centric approach entails focused local collective actions in coffee producing countries together with local stakeholders, complemented with a global drive to increase sustainable sourcing.

Despite many years of efforts and certain sustainability advancements, the sector is still facing profound challenges to sustainability. More than half of coffee farmers around the globe are challenged by poverty, and coffee supply is threatened by climate change and increasing regulatory requirements.

“GCP has demonstrated that change beyond supply chains is possible when GCP Member companies work with our NGO and government partners through collective action,” says GCP Board Chair, Carlos Brando. “This pre-competitive collaboration is crucial to generating adequate level of investment and change. No one company can be effective by itself. Collective action is essential to not just ensuring compliance but also accelerating measurable sustainability at scale.”

The combined $1.5 million investment enables GCP to grow, attracting new talent and further revenue, including public co-funding that is key to accelerate the first six entrepreneurial country programs to investment-ready levels and support the development of aligned measurement in the form of GCP Country Reports.

GCP Members share the vision of a thriving and sustainable coffee sector for generations to come. That future depends on achieving sustained prosperity for farmers, improved well-being for all the members of the coffee chain, and resilient coffee production systems compatible with the conservation of nature. GCP’s 2030 Goal of transformational change aims at significantly advancing smallholders’ prosperity and sustainability: together with its members and the Network of Country Platforms in coffee-producing countries, GCP is set to close at least 25% of the living income gap for more than one million smallholder farmers in more than 10 countries. Known as “GCP 2.0”, the Global Coffee Platform’s farmer-centric effort entails focused local collective actions in coffee producing countries in partnership with local stakeholders, complemented with a global drive to increase sustainable sourcing.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
