CoffeeNetwork (New York) - Brazilian exports of soluble coffee stand out in for all of coffee exports so far in 2023. Last month, according to data from the Brazilian Association of the Soluble Coffee Industry (Abics), shipments of the product totaled the equivalent of 324,265 bags of 60 kg, with a growth of 28.7% compared to the 251,994 bags registered in the same month last year. In revenue, the advance is 42% in the same comparison, with sales jumping from US$ 42.3 million to the current US$ 60 million.

Since the start of the calendar year, Brazil exported 1.239 million bags of soluble coffee, up 0.8% compared to the 1.229 million bags exported from January to the end of April 2022. Shipments yielded US$ 229.3 million in these four months, advancing 12.3% over the US$ 204.1 million earned in the same period last year.

Analyzing the data, the director of Institutional Relations of Abics, Aguinaldo Lima, points out that soluble coffee is the only segment that has positive performance so far in 2023, since coffee beans - Arabica and canéphora (robusta + conilon) - and roasted and ground coffee have all seen declines.

"Although the war has reduced shipments of soluble coffee by 77% to Russia and also to Ukraine, the Brazilian soluble coffee industries have expanded their efforts and business in other nations, with emphasis on an advance of 2.413% in shipments to Mexico, which imported about 17,000 bags by April; and Finland, which also had a notable increase in their soluble coffee exports.

In the first quarter of 2023, the United States tops the ranking of the main commercial partners of soluble coffee in Brazil, with 274,542 bags, an amount 16.9% higher than that recorded between January and the end of April last year. Closing the top 5, comes Argentina, with 156,914 bags (+86.4%); Finland, with 87,818 bags; Japan, with 60,502 bags (-15.8%); and Poland, with 55,126 bags (+11%).

INTERNAL CONSUMPTION

The consumption of soluble coffee in Brazil continues to expand and shows an advance of 3.9% from January to April of this year. In the period, Brazilians consumed the equivalent of 296,696 bags of 60 kg, above the 285,478 bags recorded in the first four months of last year, according to Abics data.

"This performance results from investments made by factories in Brazil in new manufacturing plants and in the development of products increasingly focused on quality, enhancing the sensory characteristics and the diversity of products to the final consumer," analyzes Lima.

According to him, this qualitative evolution and the expansion of the range of options is evident when it is observed that, amid the advance of domestic consumption, imports of instant coffees have retreated.

From January to April, Brazilian sales of the product from abroad total 7,107 bags, which represents a reduction of 29% compared to the 10,015 bags recorded in the first quarter of 2022.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 11

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.
