Gold and the Surprisingly Durable Myth of the Wartime Safe-Haven Bid

Gold carries a long-standing reputation as a wartime safe haven, a market investors are told to expect rallying whenever geopolitical risk rises. That reputation does not hold up cleanly, because gold sold off rather than rallied during a stretch of heightened tension around Iran. The episode matters because it separates a comfortable assumption from what actually moves the metal. For traders positioning around gold, mistaking the headline reflex for the real driver is a costly error.

James Stanley is FOREX.com's Senior Market Analyst, an event-driven strategist who has traded across equities, options, fixed income and foreign exchange since 1999, grounded in price action and macroeconomics. His coverage runs across gold, Federal Reserve policy, the U.S. dollar and the funding stresses that move between them.

Key Themes

  • Gold sold off during heightened tension around Iran, defying the assumption that conflict automatically lifts safe-haven demand.
  • Softening Federal Reserve rate hike expectations, not geopolitics, provide the clearer driver behind gold's renewed strength.
  • Central bank reserve diversification into gold underpins demand, particularly as the U.S. dollar weakens.

Gold Sold Off as Iran Tensions Escalated

Gold declined during a period of intensifying tension around Iran, the exact conditions in which safe-haven demand is supposed to appear. The move ran directly against the conventional playbook that pairs conflict with a rising gold price. According to Stanley, "it was right around the whole scenario around Iran when this thing got splashed and just continued to sell off", a sequence that undercut the war-hedge assumption. The consequence for traders is that geopolitical headlines are an unreliable timing tool for gold, since the market repeatedly failed to behave the way the narrative predicted.

Gold Tracks Fed Rate Expectations More Than War

"Fundamentals just aren't a perfect push point for price when we often see these things on a delayed fuse", Stanley said, framing why gold responds to policy on a lag rather than to headlines in real time. Gold's renewed strength lines up with softening Federal Reserve rate hike expectations far more closely than with any geopolitical trigger. As those rate hike odds price out, the backdrop grows more supportive, with a softer U.S. dollar and USD/JPY stress adding to the pull. The impact is a cleaner framework for the metal, one anchored to the path of monetary policy and the coming inflation data rather than to conflict risk. Traders watching gold are better served tracking rate expectations than parsing the next geopolitical flare-up.

Central Bank Buying Anchors Gold Demand

Central bank reserve diversification into gold has provided a durable floor under the market, a structural bid that persists beneath the short-term price swings. That demand strengthens as the U.S. dollar weakens, since a falling dollar raises the incentive to shift reserves toward the metal. The support is more than tactical, Stanley notes, because with the dollar softening and carry-trade stress in play, "there's even more reason for central banks to try to load the long side of gold". For investors, this reserve-driven demand helps explain why gold held firm even as the war-haven story disappointed.
