How Brazil Is Outsmarting the Fertilizer Price Shock
Global fertilizer markets in 2025 have faced persistent volatility, but Brazil stands out for its resilience. While prices remain elevated and trade policies uncertain, the country’s farmers and importers are finding new ways to secure supply and contain costs. The shift toward alternative products underscores both agility and strategic foresight in the face of a turbulent global backdrop.
Tomas Pernias, Market Intelligence Analyst at StoneX Brazil, outlines how domestic demand has remained strong even as global conditions tighten. His analysis highlights how Brazilian buyers have diversified their import mix, balancing risk through product substitutions and timing flexibility.
Key Themes from the Discussion
Brazil’s downstream fertilizer demand remains higher than in 2024 despite cost pressures.
Importers have increased purchases of SSP, ammonia, and sulfate to offset urea and MAP shortages.
Strategic buying behavior has helped stabilize local supply amid global disruptions.
Even under global trade stress, Brazilian fertilizer demand has stayed firm. “Downstream fertilizer demand is higher than last year”, Pernias notes, emphasizing that buyers have not retreated from the market. Instead, the data shows consistent import volumes through 2025. This stability stems from Brazil’s agricultural scale and the sector’s need to maintain production continuity regardless of international price cycles.
Import Strategy Shifts Toward Flexibility
One of the key adaptations has been a move toward less-concentrated and more affordable fertilizer products. Pernias explains that “Brazilian buyers increased imports of less concentrated products such as SSP, ammonia and sulfate”. This tactical switch allowed farmers to manage cost exposure and avoid disruptions caused by urea and MAP shortages. The trend reveals how local market knowledge and flexible sourcing have become essential to sustaining profitability.
