Perspective: Mid-Day Commentary for December 11

By: Arlan Suderman, Chief Commodities Economist

December 11 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged to a new record high in this morning's trade following Wednesday's rate cut by the Federal Reserve, while a surprise disappointment in Oracle's forward guidance sent the Nasdaq lower, even as it recovers to trade near its session highs. The VIX is trading at a 12-week low near 15 at midday, reflecting general calm on Wall Street, while the dollar index falls to a two-month low 98.2. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.12%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 3.51%. Crude oil prices 2% lower, while the grain and oilseed markets are generally mixed to firmer at midday.

Exporters sold 93.7 million bushels of U.S. corn in the week ending November 13, along with 25.6 million bushels of soybeans, 31.2 million bushels of wheat, and net cancellations of 0.9 million bushels of grain sorghum. The corn and wheat numbers are impressive, while the soybean and grain sorghum numbers are disappointing. A lack of Chinese buying is the primary reason that they're disappointing, especially since the week reported is two weeks after the handshake trade deal between President Trump and President Xi. We saw very little market reaction to the release of these numbers this morning, because they're basically a month old, as USDA continues trying to catchup with data releases after the government shutdown in October and early November. Yet, I report them here because USDA is getting enough caught up now to give us some noteworthy trends.

Marketing year to date corn export sales through November 13 totaled 1.603 billion bushels, up 367 million bushels from the previous year's pace. That total also exceeds the seasonal pace needed to hit USDA's record high target of 3.200 billion bushels by 277 million bushels. That suggests that there is more upside potential to that export target, although I'm anticipating that the sales pace will be slowing as we move into the second and third quarters of the year, assuming that Brazil has a normal winter corn growing season.

On the other hand, marketing year to date soybean export sales through November 13 total a 12-year low 676 million bushels, down 472 million bushels from the previous year's pace, and 331 million bushels below the seasonal pace needed to hit USDA's target by the end of the year. The recent pickup in Chinese buying should eat away at that deficit in the weeks ahead as USDA reporting catches up, but the question remains on whether it will completely close the gap? The market is skeptical.

We're nearly half way through the wheat marketing year, with sales to date through November 13 exceeding the seasonal pace needed to hit USDA's target by 101 million bushels. Some in the trade were surprised that USDA didn't cut its soybean export target on Tuesday, but I could see it holding the line a bit longer to see how Chinese purchases play out. But the failure to push the wheat number higher was a bit more  surprising. USDA probably did not raise its target due to the nearly 9 mmt increase in other major exporting countries, and that's a legitimate argument. Yet, a larger percentage than normal of that increase is feed wheat quality this year, which has resulted in greater demand for higher quality milling wheat for blending purposes. I wouldn't have raised the export target by 100 million bushels, but I would have added 25 million bushels.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.

Perspective: Mid-Day Commentary for August 5

August 5 – The Dow Jones is ripping higher for yet another session, up safely over 500 points at the time of this writing to carve out another record high; the S&P and NASDAQ are a bit less enthusiastic but the former is still making its own record high, while the latter is less than 500 points off its own top thanks to a strong ongoing week of trade. The dollar is churning lower this morning in an effort to re-test Monday’s 1 ½-month low, while the ten-year note has flipped higher in the mid-morning hours. The CME FedWatch tool interesting has market odds of a quarter-point rate hike next month coming closer to a 50-50 proposition as crude oil prices decline.
