Peru To Inaugurate Large Port Next Week That Could Benefit Brazil, Like Coffee, Cocoa

Coffee Network (Cartagena) - Peru will inaugurate a new macro port of 1.5 million TEUs in capacity Chancay port next week, which will revolutionazy trade with the Asia-Pacific region, sources of Peru told Coffee Network.

The $1.3bn Chancay port financed by Chinese investors will allow exports of coffee, cocoa, metals such as copper among others.

The inauguration of the mega Chancay port on the Pacific is expected to take place on 14 November, and Chinese president, Xi Jinping is expected to attend, Peruvian sources said on the sidelines of the Colombian coffee exporters association summit.

The port, located 50 miles away from Lima, was built by Chinese Cosco Shipping. Cosco will be the sole operator. The majority of Peruvian coffee and cocoa is being exported through the  Cayao port.

The port not only will be an alternative terminal to Peru’s coffee produced in the areas of Chanchamayo, but also will also allow exports of goods and services produced in the Brazilian states of Rondonia, Amazonas and Acre as they are connected with a road that links Peru with those provinces in Brazil. As a result, Chancay could become a point of entry and exit of trade from China and Brazilian northern region.

In 2023, the northern Brazilian states closest to Peru (Acre, Amazonas, and Rondonia) exported and imported about 1.5 million tons from the entire Pacific basin of Asia and Oceania. That figure would be equivalent to 5% of Chancay’s annual capacity.

“The other Brazilian states have other ports much closer, so they would be very unlikely to use the port of Chancay. So, even if the freight were attractive, the volume of cargo from the Brazilian north would be modest,” says Leolino Dourado, researcher at the center for China and Asia-Pacific studies at the Universidad del Pacifico.

Although the maritime distance between Chancay and China is shorter than from Brazilian ports, cargo from Brazil would travel a longer distance to reach Chancay, Dourado said in a research note.

In the case of Manaus, for example, the city is about 3,600 km from Chancay, while Chancay is about 1,600 km from the nearest Atlantic port. Adding to the above, the maritime distance to reach China (17,000 and 22,000  kilometers, respectively), the Shanghai-Chancay-Manaus route would be 13% shorter than the current Atlantic route. Despite this difference, the cost per kilometer of maritime transport is a fraction of what it costs for land (or river) transport to reach the port.

Therefore, the potential benefits of the shorter China-Peru sea distance could be obfuscated by the longer distance to reach Chancay from Brazil, since the final freight price may not be cheaper than the current route. Therefore, a freight cost projection is needed to support the idea of a Shanghai-Chancay-Manaus corridor, Dourado concluded.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
