THIS IS THE LAST SOYBEAN WEEKLY OF 2022
  • THE SOYBEAN WEEKLY REPORT WILL RETURN ON 01/09/2023.

  • HAPPY HOLIDAYS! 🎅🎄🎊

BEARISH DRIVERS
  • World 2022/23 production estimated above consumption;
  • Fight on inflation may generate recession;
  • Possibility of record production in Brazil;
  • Soy dollar in Argentina;
  • Covid-19 on the rise in China.

BulliSH DRIVERS
  • Concerns about the weather for 2022/23 in South America;
  • Relaxed anti-COVID measures in China;
  • Prospects of increase soybean crushing in the US in coming years;
  • Increased mandatory biodiesel blend  in Brazil in 2023.

Last week, soybean prices fluctuated around stability in Chicago, with no major gains or losses in the period. The contract for January ended Friday (16) at 1480 cents per bushel.

Commodity markets were influenced by macroeconomic factors, with emphasis on export data from the US, in addition to the progress of the crop in South America.

On the upside, the dollar falls around the world, as this movement favors the competitiveness of US exports.

Still on US exports, in the week ended December 8, 1.8 million tonnes of soybeans were inspected for shipment, a level slightly below a week before, but above last year. In accumulated terms, shipments for the 2022/23 season reach 23.4 million tonnes, against 25.5 million in the same period of 2021.

Regarding export sales in the same week ended December 8, 2.9 million tonnes of soybeans were traded, a volume considerably above the ceiling of estimates, which ranged from 1.5 to 2 million tonnes. In accumulated terms, 41.8 million tonnes of 2022/23 soybeans have already been sold, higher than in the same period last year, when sales for the 2021/22 crop were at 40 million tonnes.

US soybean sales have gained strength recently and the market follows Chinese purchases at a time when the country has eased its zero-tolerance policy against COVID-19.

Still on the demand side, the National Oilseed Processors Association (NOPA) released US soybean crush in November, which stood at 4.88 million tonnes, a level below market expectations, which were 4.94 million, but in line with that recorded in November 2021, when it was also at 4.88 million. Even so, in general, soybean crushing in the country remains strong, with emphasis on the positive perspectives for production of renewable diesel.

In South America, the weather continues to be closely monitored. The Buenos Aires exchange reported that 50.6% of soybeans had been sown by December 14, with the rains recently recorded allowing good progress. Even so, compared to last year, the delay is 14.2 percentage points.

In Brazil, although in general the soybean and summer corn crops are going well even with weather irregularities in several regions, corn losses are already expected in Rio Grande do Sul, according to a StoneX survey. Irregular rainfall in the state during the second half of November and throughout the first weeks of December, a period considered to be crucial for productive potential of corn crops in many regions, ended up causing productivity losses. In the case of soybeans, it is still too early to talk concretely about losses, given that the weather throughout January and February will be essential to define the crop. However, it will be essential to monitor the scenario that is to develop in the region, noting that, in some of the last few seasons, the state has had significant crop failures for soybeans, as in the previous cycle (2021/22), under the influence of La Niña, which is also present in the current season.

Weather forecasts for the next few days indicate that rainfall in Rio Grande do Sul should remain limited, while more significant volumes of precipitation should return to Argentina later this week.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.

Perspective: Mid-Day Commentary for August 7

August 7 – Stocks are looking to end a strong week on a strong note, with the major indexes all in the green at the time of writing. The VIX touched a nearly seven-month low earlier in the session and remains muted as it hovers just below the 15-mark as this morning’s ugly labor market data helps ease hawkish Fed jitters. The dollar has rebounded from its nearly two-month low earlier in the session but remains in the red on the day, trading at 99.55 at the time of writing. Treasuries have had a very volatile day, with yields tanking following this morning’s Non-Farm Payrolls release but bouncing back into midday, with 30-year yields now trading at 5.209%, 10-year yields trading at 4.654%, and 2-year yields trading at 4.204%. Crude oil has risen from the morning lows as traders eye the weekend market closure for potential geopolitical developments, with nearby WTI now down only 0.2% on the day to trade around $78.10 and nearby Brent breaking into the green, up 1.25% on the day to trade above $83.50. The ags are largely mixed, with the grains and oilseeds mostly in the green, save for a mixed picture in the soy complex, while live and feeder cattle futures move in opposite directions, with the former adding to yesterday’s sharp losses and the latter attempting a rebound.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
