Starbucks Unveils $12 Million Investment IN Colombia To Open 30 Coffee Shops

Coffee Network (Bogota)-  Coffee chain Starbucks plans to open 30 new coffee shops in Colombia over the next three years demanding an  investment of US$12 million, the company said.

Since its arrival into the world’s third-largest coffee producing nation, Starbucks has opened 71 shops in six cities, including Bogota, Medellin, Cali, Barranquilla, Bucaramanga and Cartagena.

As Starbucks expands across the market, the company plans to enter new cities, introduce new store formats, and build more sustainable stores. In addition to its first drive-thru store, opened in Cali in 2022, the company will unveil its first university store at University Los Andes this September, which will be certified under Starbucks Greener Store programme. Currently, there are 25 Starbucks Stores that hold that greener certification, which aims to cut the company’s global carbon emissions, water usage, and waste sent to landfills by 50% by 2030.

Recently, Starbucks celebrated its ten years anniversary in Colombia. Brady Brewer, CEO, Starbucks International said “Our future is bright in Colombia, where our partners will continue to deliver exceptional coffee with the passion and expertise that only Starbucks can offer.”

Starbucks’ coffee shops in Colombia compete to other more established brands such as Juan Valdez, owned by the Colombian coffee growers federation, as well as local brand Tostao among others.

Since its founding in 1971, Starbucks has proudly offered coffee from Colombia through a blend on the company’s original menu. Colombian coffee is a key component of Starbucks Espresso Roast – the heart of Starbucks espresso beverages around the world. Locally, Starbucks serves 100% Colombian coffee in all handcrafted espresso beverages and offers Starbucks® Colombia Nariño and Starbucks® Colombia as single-origin coffees.

In 2012, Starbucks established a farmer support center in the coffee-producing city of Manizales dedicated to assisting Colombian coffee growers, their families, and communities, with a focus on sustaining a high-quality coffee supply. In 2022, the Farmer Support Center and Starbucks Colombia introduced the Juntos por el Café (Together for Coffee) programme where a portion of sales will benefit local coffee-growing communities. Additionally, the organisations will collaborate to jointly donate over 5,000 native trees to farmers in Huila. These trees will provide essential shade for coffee plants, lower crop temperatures, and help maintain consistent bean quality.

In 2022, Starbucks Coffee Company and Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC),expanded a programme to support farmers in the Starbucks CAFE Practices network. They launched an initiative to help farmers re-cultivate their farms with more resilient coffee tree varieties and donated 55 million coffee seedlings and essential fertilisers. This $7.2 million investment has benefitted over 12,000 farmers.  Additionally, Starbucks and Conservation International are working together in Huila to protect vital forests, enhance local agricultural nurseries, and improve water quality in seven coffee-producing municipalities.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 11

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.
