Third Coffee Producers’ Forum Bets on Prosperity for Coffee Growers
Coffee Network (Bogota)- In its third edition, which took place for the first time virtually with Rwanda as host country, the World Coffee Producers' forum today laid solid foundations for advance towards the prosperity of coffee growers in the world, going more beyond simply guaranteeing them a vital income.
“The vital income must be - if it is wanted - an intermediate stop in the way to the prosperity of the coffee growers ”, said Colombian Juan Esteban Orduz, director of the National Federation of Coffee Growers (FNC) in the United States and president of the world’s coffee producers forum.
“The goal should not be static to just get the producers out of the poverty, but much more ambitious: to create among the entire chain the structural conditions in the producing countries and in the market that allow a true prosperity for the coffee growers. That the progress of the coffee growers is always ascending, ensuring that the following generations will be able to continue producing coffee and prospering too”, he added.
To this end, based on an action plan, the member countries will create a national coffee prosperity plans to be presented at 2022, in Kigali, Rwanda, at the tentative face-to-face meeting that will be the second part of this third edition of the Forum.
At the beginning of the meeting, moderated by Claude Bizimana, executive director of the Rwanda National Agricultural Export Development Council (NAEB), the Rwandan Minister of Agriculture, Gerardine Mukeshimana, and the former first Ethiopian Minister Hailemariam Desalegne highlighted that this Forum focuses in creating the structures to bring prosperity to producers.
Jose María Figueres, former president of Costa Rica, underscored the importance of research and technology, how to develop resistant and more productive varieties to face common challenges such as climate change and poverty in the coffee sector.
The General Manager of the Colombian coffee growers federation and leader in the creation and implementation of the global coffee producers forums, said he pleased with the forum's commitment so that the world's coffee growers not only get out of poverty, but become prosperous.
"What has been clear for a long time is that the producer must have an income worthy that it goes from generation to generation and that is why we are here today, working to achieve this goal, ”he explained.
And so he ushered in the keynote speaker, Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, of whom he said he has been a reference for the coffee world and to understand the way and this new prosperity concept.
After reviewing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of Nations Together, Sachs proposed the construction of an index map multidimensional in the coffee regions to serve as a starting point, as a baseline, to prioritize actions and improve living conditions of the producers.
This index includes variables such as income, health care, internet access, education, food security, drinking water, basic sanitation, electricity and vulnerability to climate variability.
Working with other international organizations, including bringing coffee issues at the request of the United Nations Organization Food and Agriculture (FAO), important progress will be made, he anticipated Sachs.
Co-responsibility of the entire chain
As another key point of the day, in the panel discussion on the prosperity of coffee growers, it was highlighted the importance of fair prices paid by the other actors in the chain.
"Benefits must be shared in the supply chain," Ines Burrus, CEO of consulting firm Burrus Development, said. She also highlighted the importance of connectivity and traceability for improve the prosperity of women coffee growers.
The contributions of international donors and agencies are also an important source of financial resources to execute projects of development for the benefit of coffee growers.
Carlos Felipe Jaramillo, Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean of the World Bank, underlined the need to address sustainably multidimensional challenges of the coffee sector.
Government support in public policy for the development of the coffee sector is essential, so the World Bank wants to support financing, focusing on supporting small producers.
Luis Felipe López-Calva, regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), recalled that national social protection systems represent a welfare cushion, a minimum floor, for coffee growers.
In conclusion, Jean-Chrysostome Ngabitsinze, Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources of Rwanda, said: “We can see that challenges among small producers are common. Coffee is not only talking about quality and processes, but also about giving an important benefit to the primary producer. (…) Once again, let's think about coffee growers, because they are the backbone of our industry ”.
