Truckers Strike Across Colombia Worsens, Hits Coffee On Diesel Price Rise

Bogota (Coffee Network) –A truckers’ strike across Colombia has worsened with widespread blockades throughout the country as truckers protest the rise in diesel prices, blocking the main harvest in this Andean nation that begins to be collected.

The most affected regions are Santander, Norte de Santander, Cundinamarca,  Meta –with the road to Llano foothills– and Bogotá. In Antioquia, Colombia’s second-largest coffee producing region, there is no connection between Medellin and Bogota and Medellin with the Caribbean coast.

Roads that use coffee growers in Antioquia are blocked to reach Caribbean ports, affecting exports of mainly banana, but also coffee.

President Gustavo Petro raised diesel prices to about COP2,000 per gallon ($0.5) ending subsidies on diesel. The government yesterday canceled plans to increase diesel prices by up to COP6,000 per gallon for the rest of the year. The truckers demand scrapping the increase to lift the strike, they said yesterday evening. Colombia could not transport 200,000 boxes of banana to the Santa Marta port failing to meet international deliveries amid the truckers strike.

The Colombia’s capital is fully blocked amid more than 10 blockades that prevent people from communicating with nearby towns and provinces.

Truckers are also blocking the coffee-producing provinces of Caldas.

Colombia is losing $300 million per day as it is unable to export its traditional products such as banana, coffee, lemon, coal among others, the country’s exporters association Analdex said.

The Agriculture Ministry requested the truckers to allow the passage of vehicles loaded with food and animals. Colombia is already warning a scarcity of chicken and eggs due to the blockades for local consumption.

Colombia begins to collect its main harvest with the bulk set to be collected in late September, October and November.  A coffee grower in Risaralda said they are picking beans and storing them until the strike ends.

The measure to increase diesel prices comes after Petro also ended the subsidy on gasoline. This measure is part of a series of efforts by Petro to remedy the economic deficits inherited from  predecessors. Managing the state fund, which subsidizes the difference between international costs and domestic fuel prices, has been a major challenge. With a current deficit of around COP10 trillion pesos, the need to financially stabilize this fund is more pressing than ever. But that is lower than the COP33 trillion when Petro started his presidency in August 2022.
