Value of Colombia’s Coffee Harvest Could Climb 30% in 2022 on High Coffee Prices: FNC

Coffee Network (Bogotá) – The value of Colombia’s 2022 coffee harvest could climb up to 30% on year so long as the value paid for Colombian coffee remains high, the general manager of the coffee growers federation, Roberto Velez said.

The value of the 2021 coffee harvest likely ended at COP10.8 trillion Colombian pesos (US$2.71 billion), up from COP9.4 trillion in 2020, according to calculations from the Colombian coffee growers federation.

And if coffee prices remain at historic high levels, it means the value of the coffee harvest could be around COP14.04 trillion Colombian pesos.

“Last year, on this same date, the price (for a load of coffee was) COP1.1 million. Today, the load is COP2.2 million. If we once again have a production close to 13 million bags, with the current prices that we are seeing, which can be maintained throughout the year, we can increase coffee income by up to 30% in 2022,” he said.

Two bags of parchment coffee carrying 125kg are worth today COP2.149 million, compared with 1.1 million a year ago.

Velez reiterated that coffee output in 2022 won’t surpass 13.5 million bags  of 60-kg because coffee plantations have endured strong rainfall for the second consecutive year as the Niña weather phenomenon continues for the second consecutive year.

“For the second consecutive year, we have the La Niña phenomena. In the country it has been raining more than it traditionally rains in producing areas. We have had two La Niña phenomena in a row. I don't think we're going to get to 14 or 14.5 million bags this year. I think we can be well served if we produce 13 million,” he said.

Colombia is expected to repeat exports of around 12.5 million bags to end with a coffee turnover of close to US$3.8 billion. “Coffee represents almost 10% of Colombia's formal exports and we believe that coffee's contribution to the national economy was one point of GDP.”

Colombia plans to renew about 10% of the coffee area each year, which means almost 90,000 hectares per year.

“Today we have the best technical indicators of Colombian coffee growing in its history. Among them: greater density, greater youth of the trees and a great production capacity. In 2025, with normal weather, we can produce 14.5 million bags,” he noted.

Colombia, the world’s third-largest coffee producer, produced 12.6 million bags in 2021, down from 13.89 million bags in 2020, FNC said. The figure is the lowest since 2014 when Colombia produced 12.14 million bags.

The lower-than-expected output is attributed to two-month national strike and certainly on torrential rains for the past two years.

The production figure is sharply below what analysts had expected. Output is even lower than the 13 million- 13.5 million bag revised target of FNC for the full calendar year 2021.

Colombia has endured two consecutive years of strong rainfall. Rains were particularly strong in August-Mid December hit by the La Niña weather phenomenon, which merged with the country’s rainy season that happens in September-December.

La Niña is expected to pelt this Andean country until February or March, Colombia’s weather office Ideam said.

The sharply lower output is a sign that Colombia will find it difficult to return to production levels of around 14 million bags as it recorded in 2015-2020, a coffee analyst, who remained anonymous, said.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 11

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.
