Vietnam Positions Itself for a Landmark Coffee Export Year

CoffeeNetwork (New York) - Vietnam has entered the new year with extraordinary momentum, signaling what may become the most significant surge in coffee exports the country has ever recorded. The early weeks of 2026 brought a wave of encouraging data from Vietnam Customs, painting a picture of an industry accelerating beyond expectations. Shipments of green coffee, processed products, and multiple bean varieties moved through ports at a pace that far outstripped activity during the same period last year. The value of these exports rose sharply as well, elevating coffee to one of the nation's leading agricultural earners and underscoring Vietnam’s expanding presence in the global coffee economy.

Activity within the sector is not only defined by rising volumes but also by the broadening diversity of markets that are purchasing Vietnamese coffee. Shipments increased across nearly all major destinations in the early weeks of the year. Germany, Spain, Italy, Algeria, and Japan all recorded stronger import figures, reflecting heightened demand from both established and emerging consumer markets. Data from the Vietnam General Department of Customs shows that several of these countries saw notable increases in import value and steady growth in import volumes, helping cement Vietnam’s position as an indispensable supplier across Europe, North Africa, and Asia.

Within the export portfolio itself, robusta continued to serve as the backbone of Vietnam’s coffee trade. Shipments of the variety maintained a commanding share of the country’s outbound coffee and generated substantial export earnings. Arabica, although a much smaller component of Vietnam’s production, also posted remarkable gains, reflecting both the rising global interest in specialty origins and Vietnam’s long‑term strategy to diversify its offerings. Beyond green beans, processed coffee products demonstrated strong performance as well, signaling an intentional shift toward value‑added exports. Industry observers have described this trend as a promising indicator that Vietnam’s coffee sector is evolving beyond commodity‑based trade into a more sophisticated, vertically integrated model capable of capturing greater revenue and competing more meaningfully in premium segments.

The impressive start to 2026 builds upon an already exceptional performance the previous year. Vietnam concluded 2025 with its highest-ever coffee export volumes and earnings, establishing a foundation for continuing expansion. Industry leaders within the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association anticipate that the current harvest could surpass even those record figures. The organization has projected that improved growing conditions, greater investment in farm inputs, and higher market prices have all contributed to healthier yields and improved production potential. With these factors converging, 2026 appears poised to outshine the previous cycle and set a new benchmark for Vietnamese coffee exports.

International agencies are reinforcing this sense of optimism. The United States Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service released its outlook ahead of the 2025–2026 marketing year, estimating that Vietnam’s coffee production would rise substantially. The analysis pointed to the responsiveness of Vietnamese farmers to elevated global coffee prices, which encouraged stronger crop management and additional investment in farm inputs. The USDA also noted that exports were likely to grow across multiple categories, including roasted and soluble coffees, with Asian markets expected to drive a significant portion of that demand. This long‑range view aligns with the robust data emerging from the early months of the year, offering a strong foundation for confidence in Vietnam’s upward trajectory.

In December, the USDA revised their forecast for the country’s 2025/26 coffee exports to 27.3 million bags GBE, eight percent higher than estimated MY 2024/25 exports. Estimated MY 2024/25 coffee exports are lowered to 25.2 million bags GBE, including green bean, roasted and soluble coffee. Vietnam Customs data reports coffee exports totaling 24.8 million bags. However, trade contacts and media sources suggest that actual volumes may be higher due to increased shipments of roasted and soluble coffee. Additionally, Vietnam experienced a surge in international tourists in 2025. Tourists often purchase coffee while visiting to bring as a gift or consume themselves. These sales are not accounted for in export statistics.

At the same time, global trends are shaping the landscape into which Vietnam is exporting its coffee. International organizations have begun to warn that the global market may transition from scarcity to equilibrium, or even excess supply, as production in several key countries recovers. Forecasts from institutions such as the World Bank anticipate broader increases in output across traditional coffee‑producing regions, which could place downward pressure on prices in the near future. Even so, Vietnam’s advantages in efficiency, productivity, and diversified product offerings provide resilience in an environment that may become more competitive. With rising expectations for transparency and traceability in global supply chains, Vietnam’s investments in quality control, documentation, and processing upgrades position its coffee sector to navigate the changing market landscape with greater stability.

Taken together, the developments of early 2026 suggest that Vietnam is entering a defining moment in its coffee‑export story. Surging demand, increasing recognition in global markets, expanding processed‑coffee capabilities, and strong support from both domestic associations and international analysts all point toward a milestone year. If current patterns continue, Vietnam will not only solidify its place as a leading force in the global coffee trade but will also reshape perceptions of what a high‑volume exporter can achieve when strategic investment, favorable growing conditions, and global demand converge at precisely the right time.
