Arabica Hits Four-Month Highs on Brazil Drought and Weak Dollar

Arabica Coffee Rallies on Brazil Drought and Weak Dollar

Fernando Maximiliano, StoneX Brazil Market Intelligence Manager, discusses the surge in arabica coffee prices and the global supply challenges driving the rally.

Key Takeaways

  • Global coffee stocks remain tight after years of drawdowns
  • Brazil’s arabica production faces sharp declines and weather risks
  • A weaker US dollar adds support to New York coffee prices

Global Stocks Keep Running Low

Maximiliano highlights that global coffee stocks have been falling since 2021, with more than 20 million bags used from reserves. Current production levels are insufficient to rebuild inventories, keeping the market tight.

Brazil’s Arabica Crop Faces a Steep Fall

Brazil’s arabica production has fallen by 18.4 percent, with unexpected frost in August adding further stress. This structural weakness continues to influence prices globally.

La Niña Threatens the Flowering Stage

Dry conditions during the flowering stage pose risks for the 2026 crop. “This will be the guide for the next price trend”. Forecasts suggest a strong chance of La Niña, raising concerns over delayed rainfall in key coffee regions.

A weaker US dollar is another factor supporting prices. As Maximiliano explains, “when we see the dollar falling against the Brazilian currency, it is less interesting for the farmers in Brazil”. This reduces supply and strengthens New York contracts.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 14

August 14 – The S&P is on the cusp of new highs again this morning following another relatively quiet night in stock futures. This week’s inflation data was a non-event for the markets, as it came in at to modestly below expectations, leaving this morning’s retail sales numbers to finish out the week. Those numbers came in softer than expected, leading to lower Treasury yields and increased hopes that the Federal Reserve will back off its rate hike ideas, which supported stock futures. The VIX continues to trade near 14, which is near 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.6. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.65%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.13% as the yield curve continues to steepen. WTI crude oil is trading near $81 this morning, while Brent trades near $87 per barrel. The roller coaster continues in the grain and oilseed markets, with prices higher this morning on escalating tensions in the Russia – Ukraine war.

Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.64%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.15%. WTI crude oil is trading near $81 per barrel, while Brent trades near $87 per barrel. Wheat prices again firmed overnight on geopolitical risks in the Black Sea Region, while corn and soybean prices pulled back modestly from yesterday’s big gains.
