Cattle Travel 2000km as Supply Imbalance Hits Australia Beef Market
Ripley Atkinson, StoneX Livestock & Commodity Broker, explains how drought in southern Australia and long transport distances are reshaping the beef market.
Key Takeaways
Cattle are traveling over 2000km due to regional supply shortages
Southern drought has forced northern herds to supply the east coast
Future price risks grow as the cattle cycle shifts and numbers tighten
Transporting Cattle Across Vast Distances
Atkinson highlights how cattle in Australia are traveling distances longer than the length of England, with journeys of more than 2100km to reach end markets. The costs are significant, at over AUD 200 per head, creating large financial burdens for producers and buyers alike.
Southern Drought Pressures Supply
Severe drought conditions in southern regions have reduced cattle numbers as farmers are forced to destock. This has created a sharp supply imbalance, with limited availability of grass and feed resources driving tighter market conditions in Victoria and South Australia.
Northern Herds Supporting National Markets
Meanwhile, northern regions such as Queensland have enjoyed strong seasonal conditions, with plentiful grass and large herds. As a result, northern supply is now meeting both local demand and the shortfall in southern markets, effectively sustaining the eastern seaboard.
Future Risks in the Cattle Cycle
Atkinson warns that when the cattle cycle turns and northern herds move into liquidation under drought conditions, supply could fall sharply. “There is the potential that we see significant upward pressure in cattle prices because of the reduction in available numbers”. This imbalance could artificially inflate demand and prices in the years ahead, reshaping Australia’s beef industry.
