CoffeeNetwork (New York) - The Brazilian Coffee Industry Association – ABIC, has published their last consumption figures show that, despite the economic crisis generated by the pandemic, which affected several sectors in 2021, demand for coffee followed its pace of growth: there was an increase of 1.71% compared to the same period analyzed in the previous year.

Brazil consumed 21.5 million bags between November 2020 and October 2021, an increase of 1.71% compared to the previous period, considering data from November 2019 to October 2020. This volume represents 45.3% of the 2021 harvest, which was 47.7 million bags, according to Conab.

The figures collected by ABIC also reveal that, last year, Brazil maintained the position of second largest coffee consumer in the world. The difference to first place, occupied by the United States, is 4.5 million bags. It is noteworthy that Brazil is the largest consumer of national coffees. When per capita consumption was analyzed, it was observed that, in 2021, it was 6.06 kg per year of raw coffee and 4.84 kg per year of roasted coffee. Good performance at the consumer table had a direct impact on the industry: ABIC-associated companies recorded a growth of 2.77% in the period.

Currently, the associated industries account for 72.9% of the production of roasted coffee and/or ground, and represent 85.4% share in the market.

Regarding supply, since November 2020, the IOCI remains below normal, indicating that companies, of all sizes, do not have the regular supply of coffee beans, with the supply being gradual and selective.

According to a study by ABIC, in the period from December/2020 to December/2021, the raw material was, on average, 155% more expensive, and the increase in the weighted average of other materials such as raw material, packaging, minimum wage, electricity, Diesel oil and gasoline was 107.30%. However, on the shelves, the coffee price adjustment reached an average of 52% for the same period.

ABIC performs monthly price monitoring through invoices collected in more than 1,000 municipalities. From August to December 2021, it was observed that the North and Northeast regions consumed the coffee more in 250g packages and in the other regions the packages were 500g.

The price variation by quality category was on average Extraforte (39.3%), Traditional (40.3%), Superior (28.1%) and Gourmet (20.8%), and the Northeast region had the largest adjustment in the Extraforte and Traditional categories and the Southern Region in the Superior and Gourmet categories.

Regarding the consumption of coffee by channels, 16% were in small chains (AS 1 to 4), 49% in supermarkets and hypermarkets (AS 5+) and 35% in “e atacarejo” (a mixture of wholesale and retail).

It is estimated that the sector's sales in 2021 reached R$ 15.2 billion.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.
