CoffeeNetwork (New York) – The latest report from the Brazilian Coffee Industry Association (ABIC) shows that between November 2023 and October 2024, domestic coffee consumption rose 1.1% compared to the previous period, to total 21.916 million bags.
This volume represents 40.4% of the 2024 harvest, which was 54.21 million bags, according to Conab – National Supply Company. Brazil continues to be the largest consumer of national coffees. In the previous period, the volume consumed in Brazil represented 39.4% of the harvest, which was 55.07 million bags, still taking into account Conab data.
Analyzing the data presented by ABIC, it is clear that the pace of coffee consumption continues with a growth trend, 1.11%. The associated industries had a positive change of 1.77, while the non-associated industries had a negative change of 0.66, denoting a possible consumer preference for certified coffees.
Brazil remains the second largest consumer of coffee in the world. The difference to the first place, occupied by the United States, is 4.1 million bags. If we compare the per capita consumption of Brazil with the USA (4.9 kg per person/year), the Brazilian value is higher.
Per capita consumption in the country, between November 2023 and October 2024, was 6.26 kg per year of green coffee, and 5.01 kg per person/year of roasted and ground coffee, a decrease of 2.22% compared to the same period of the previous year, which is justified by the IBGE population base, which grew. Brazilians consume, on average, 1,430 cups/year.
Regional consumption
The Southeast region accounts for 41.7% of the national total, while the Northeast region accounts for 26.9%, the South region for 14.6%, the North region for 8.8% and the Central-West for 8.0%.
At the moment, ABIC's member industries account for 71.7% of the production of roasted coffee beans and/or ground, and represent 86.5% of the share in supermarket retail. ABIC currently registers 2,132 certified products.
Coffee industry revenue
The revenue of the roasted coffee industry in 2024 reached R$ 36.82 billion, a positive % change of 60.85 when compared to 2023. The change occurs due to the increase in the price of coffee on the shelf.
Variation in the average price of roasted and ground coffee in retail
ABIC monitors retail sales, through 3 million invoices collected monthly at checkouts throughout Brazil.
The average price of specialty coffees increased by 9.80% when comparing the period from January 2024 to December 2024. Milk, 18.4%(+), rice, 15%(+), and soybean oil, 26.6%(+), also increased. Sugar, 3.7% (-), and beans, 3.1% (-), fell. The average of sugar, milk, rice, beans and soybean oil products is 8.7%.
