CEPEA: Coffee Exports for the 2020-2021 Harvest Largest in Brazil’s History
CoffeeNetwork (New York) - Brazilian coffee exports in the 20/21 season reached a new record, totaling 45.59 million bags of 60 kg (green, roasted and soluble beans) between Jul/20 and Jun/21, the largest volume in the entire historical series of Cecafé, started in 1990, and 13.3% higher than exports in the 19/20 season. Before the 20/21 season, the largest quantity shipped by Brazil was 41.4 million bags in 18/19.
According to researchers from Brazil’s Center of Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea), the record was linked to the high production in the 20/21 crop and the high dollar against the Real, a combination that, in addition to encouraging producers to export, also increases the competitiveness of Brazilian coffee on the international market.
Robusta has advanced in recent days, driven by the external valuations of both varieties, which, in turn, occurred due to the prospects of lower production in 21/22 and the arrival of a significant cold front in coffee regions at the end of week.
For Arabica, the increase was more expressive on Friday, July 16, when the CEPEA/ESALQ indicator of arabica type 6 had a gain of 40.74 Reais/bag on the day, closing the R $875.45/bag. The more positive scenario attracted a good number of sellers to the market, allowing the closing of deals. On Tuesday, July 20, the CEPEA/ESALQ indicator for Arabica type 6 closed at R$ 902.64/bag, a strong increase of 7.8% compared to the previous Tuesday. For Robusta, the CEPEA/ESALQ indicator of type 6 closed at R$ 549.48/bag, an increase of 5.5% compared to last week.

Daily coffee report

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.
