Coffee Dignity In Colombia Threatens to Block Highways Amid Lack of Solutions

Coffee Network (Bogota)- Colombia’s Coffee Dignity, the  group that advocates for improved economic conditions for coffee growers in Colombia, have called for protests across the nation as the government has not taken actions to improve the revenues growers receive for producing beans, Oscar Gutierrez, director of Coffee Dignity said.

“We are tired with this situation. Tomorrow, we have meeting with the Agriculture minister to listen to the same thing as this government is not taking actions,” he told Coffee Network.

The group is calling on growers in the coffee-producing municipalities to meet tomorrow and decide where they plan to march to call the government’s attention.

“If there are no solutions to our problems, we will strike,” he said. In 2012,  coffee growers blocked the country’s main highways that connect cities for about three months.

Coffee Dignity requested the administration of President Gustavo Petro to activate the coffee stabilization fund amid low coffee prices, and pay attention to the growers’ needs.

Coffee Dignity said they have sent several letters and communiques to the government seeking meetings with government officials, but they have not been heard.

In August 2022, they sent a letter to former agriculture minister Cecilia Lopez to dialogue about several aspects of the agricultural sector. In November 26, they sent a letter to the president to solve problems such as improve revenues to growers, solve problems with coffee cooperative, boost production, and pay attention to the low renovation of plantations.

On June 24, 2023, they urged the government to participate in decision-making about the future of coffee growers in a meeting held in Pereira attended by the new agriculture minister Jhenifer Mojica.

“We have held meetings, summits, assemblies and it has been impossible to move from formulations to solutions,” he noted.

They will meet again tomorrow in the city of Neiva, where they will hold a meeting with Mojica.

Coffee growers requested the national government to regulate the coffee price stabilization fund which has COP300 billion Colombian pesos in funds in ($75 million) to ensure a minimum price now that coffee prices are lower than production costs.

In December 2019, the former government created the coffee price stabilization fund. It was created with COP180 billion Colombian pesos ($53 million) injected by the government and a contribution by coffee growers.

But three years later, the Colombian government and FNC have failed to establish the regulation, which will determine whether the price stabilization fund will create hedging mechanisms or if the producer will ensure a minimum price when coffee prices are low. Consequently, the regulation will also set a benchmark price that triggers the bailout to the coffee price stabilization fund.

According to Gutierrez, the incumbent national development plan, the roadmap of President Petro for the next three years, has mandated the creation of the regulation to ensure that the price stabilization fund begins to disburse money to growers at times of low coffee prices.

The reference price for two bags of 125kg of parchment coffee is being paid at COP1.385 million pesos ($342), but coffee growers claim that production costs are ranging from COP1.450 million and COP1.55 million, resulting in losses to growers.

Coffee prices were close to reaching as high as COP2.5 million pesos for two bags of parchment coffee last year but prices have slumped to around 1.295 million on Friday.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 11

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.
