Coffee Growers in Colombia’s Province Receive Training Thanks to Peace Fund

Coffee Network (Bogota)_ Two initiatives to improve coffee growing in  Chaparral central Tolima are being implemented thanks to the support from the Sustainable Colombia Program, an initiative of the Peace Fund of Colombia and the Inter-American Development Bank.

The two projects implemented by Innovakit involve 184 small producers and their families, who receive supplies, tools, technical support and training to strengthen the Agricultural Association of the Irco Canyon Isauro Yossa, (Asoagroirco) and the Association of Agricultural and Coffee Producers Specials of the Limón District (Asotuluni).

The coffee growers will have a coffee laboratory in Chaparral and will obtain a certification in tasting and training of  27 producers in coffee entrepreneurship. This was possible thanks to an alliance with SENA (the national training service) and the University of Chaparra.

“They gave us improvements to mills, warehouses and  incentives. They have favored us coffee growers and the rural area because they have projected into the future, taught new things, things that favor the people who are heads of households,” said Aracelly Garzón, producer of Asotuluni.

Rubiel Palomino, Asoagroirco producer, explains that - thanks to the project - he was trained in the management and maintenance of machinery in Pereira (Risaralda).

“Thanks to this, today the coffee growers here in the region do not have to move to another area to do something - the maintenance of teams – that we can do it ourselves,” Anderson Gutiérrez of Asotuluni, who also received the training said.

The total investment of the two projects is close to COP3.28 billion pesos ($841mn), of which the Sustainable Colombia Program contributes with COP1.654 billion, equivalent to 51 percent of the total investment.

The remaining COP1.62 billion are the local counterpart of the beneficiary communities represented mainly in their hand of construction site.

The Sustainable Colombia Program is an initiative of the National Government which is executed by the Colombia in Peace Fund and which currently co-finances around 200 agro-environmental projects, which benefits more than 37,000 rural families.

Its prioritized area of intervention corresponds to the 170 municipalities PDET (municipalities affected by violence),  and its financing comes from the Loan to the Nation 4424/OC-CO of the Inter-American Development Bank. This multi-sector operation has the support and participation of the Ministries of Agriculture, Environment and Finance; the National Planning Department (DNP), APC-Colombia and the Peace Agreement Implementation Unit.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
