Colombia Fully Resumes Coffee Export Operations Through Pacific Ports

BOGOTA (Coffee Network) — Port operations along Colombia’s Pacific coast have fully recovered from a powerful earthquake that caused major infrastructure damage, power outages, and intermittent internet access, according to Asoexport, the country’s coffee exporters association.

Asoexport President Gustavo Gomez stated that coffee exports no longer need to be redirected to Caribbean ports, as local port yards have gradually decongested and resumed accepting shipments.

Directly after the August 10 quake, port yards reached maximum capacity due to the multi-day closure of the main Buga–Buenaventura highway, which was damaged by landslides, slope instability, and structural cracking. The highway remained completely closed until August 12. According to Colombia’s National Roads Institute (Invías), the corridor is now open to all traffic daily from 06:00 to 20:00 local time, with nighttime transit (20:00 to 06:00) restricted exclusively to emergency and humanitarian aid vehicles.

Beyond technical disruptions, the earthquake inflicted a heavy human toll on the Pacific port city of Buenaventura, where many port workers lost family members and homes, and warehouses across the district sustained severe structural damage. Nationwide emergency indicators continue to rise

Pacific port operators said they are operating.  The TCBuen said terminal capacity is operating at 80%, yard occupancy has dropped to 62%, and structural recovery stands at 88.57%. On August 22, the terminal offered 1,487 import appointments and 95 export appointments (including 20 for coffee, 21 for sugar, and 40 for breakbulk).

The Sociedad Portuaria de Buenaventura (SPB) said it serviced 1,786 trucks and processed 1,968 transactions on August 22. Container receipts for export remain open subject to appointment availability, while empty container receipts depend on shipping line free-pool availability. Dry bulk operations, including coffee, are currently running at 60% capacity. Physical inspections and warehouse operations for coffee, sugar, breakbulk, and vehicles remain active.

The port of Aguadulce said terminal inspection processes and warehouse operations are fully restored and proceeding under normal activity schedule

Human Toll Mounts

As of August 24, government updates confirm 331 deaths, 4,592 injuries, and 234 missing persons nationwide. Emergency indicators continue to rise, with 159,924 families (at least 324,157 individuals) affected across 450 municipalities in 15 departments

Perspective: Morning Commentary for September 29

September 29 – The U.S. labor market is in the spotlight today with the August JOLTs report due out at 9:00 AM Central Time. We’re essentially back to “good news is bad news” in the equities as traders view the resilience of the labor market as a permission signal for the Fed to continue moving rates higher in order to combat lingering above-target inflation. To that end, we’ll also get an update on the Fed’s preferred inflation metric, PCE, for the month of August tomorrow morning. This likely sets the tone for volatile mid-week trade, especially with the backdrop of ongoing geopolitical headlines playing a factor, and the timing coinciding with both month-end and quarter-end.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for September 28

September 28 – Stock futures are pointing to a lower open to start the week, with the Nasdaq and S&P 500 both remaining within shouting distance of their respective all-time highs, while the Dow Jones continues to be the laggard of the major indexes, holding in a clear downtrend after touching a three-plus month low last week. The VIX is elevated to start the week but remains on the low-end of 2026 trade, hovering just above 16 at the time of writing. The dollar is in the green again after big weekly gains but a lower close on Friday, trading at 101.16 to start the day. Treasury yields are looking to start the week in focus as they show signs of renewed upward momentum, as 2-year yields rise to 4.91%, 10-year yields rise to 5.215%, and 30-year yields pushing near 5.53%. Crude oil is higher but the grains and oilseeds are widely lower to start the week as speculative length expresses its disappointment regarding more concrete progress between the U.S. and China.
