UPDATE: Colombia’s 2025 Coffee Output Seen at 13.312 Million Bags; Second-Half Production to Fall by 1 Million Bags

(Adds details througout)

Coffee Network (Bogotá)—Colombia’s coffee production in calendar year 2025 is expected to reach about 13.312 million 60-kg bags, down from almost 14 million bags in 2024 as output in the second half of the year is forecast to decline by 1 million bags on year, according to German Bahamón, general manager of the Coffee Growers Federation (FNC).

Colombia produced 8.178 million bags in the second half of 2024, meaning second-half 2025 output is projected to fall to 7.178 million bags, Bahamón said.

“In the second half of the year, we expect production to drop by 1 million bags,” he told reporters during a press conference at the FNC’s annual coffee summit.

Colombia produced 6.212 million bags in the first half of 2025.

Fertilization With Stabilization Fund Resources

FNC is seeking authorization to use interests generated from the COP 550 billion saved in the Coffee Price Stabilization Fund to buy fertilizers and distribute them to growers, Bahamon noted.

Coffee growers are also allocating 0.5 cents  per pound exported as part of the 6 cents of dollar they currently pay in the so-called coffee contribution to feed the stabilization fund.

Created in 2019, the fund currently holds COP 550 billion (about $144.7 million).

“The objective of the Coffee Price Stabilization Fund is to stabilize growers’ income. There is no better income-protection tool than fertilization,” Bahamón said.

The proposal must be approved by both the stabilization fund committee and the National Coffee Fund committee.

Some industry experts have criticized the plan, arguing that the fund should be used to protect growers when international coffee prices fall—not to finance fertilizer programs.

Colombia renovated 87,750 hectares of coffee between January and November 25. The FNC expects to renovate 100,000 hectares in 2025, compared with 89,400 hectares last year. “We will improve on last year’s figure; we are very close to reaching 100,000 hectares,” Bahamón said.

Imports to Normalize

With the US reducing tariffs on Brazilian coffee to zero as well as to other producing nations,  Colombia should expect a normalization of coffee imports, Bahamon noted.

Colombia’s coffee imports from Brazil, although still declining year-to-date at -4%, rebounded in July, increasing by 141% year-over-year, the coffee exporters association Asoexport said.

Colombia imported 323,239 bags of 60-kg from Brazil in January-July down 4% over the same period last year, but 141% higher in July on the month, Asoexport said using figures from the country’s statistics department Dane.

Colombia imported 540,803 60-kg bags in January to July 2025, up 7.3% compared to the same period in 2024, Asoexport said.

Peru exported 101,744 bags to Colombia in January-Juyly . Vietnam contributed with 63,771 bags, up 3,378% on the year. Ecuador exported 18,790 bags up 58% on the year, while Mexico also exported 6,978 bags in January-July, up 50% on the year.

The sharp rise in imports can be explained by the so-called “tariff arbitrage,” which prompted market participants to importing large amounts of coffee from Brazil to re-export to the US.  This happens as the US slapped tariffs of 50% to Brazil coffee, compared with the 10% that currently pays Colombian coffee.

Juan Valdez Opens Coffee Shop in Brazil

The coffee shop of FNC, Juan Valdez, will open the first coffee shop in Brazil in the state of Sao Paulo, close to Brazil’s largest city Sao Paulo on December 4th, Bahamon said.

Extortion

Coffee growers mainly in the southern provinces of Cauca and Narino are been guarded by the police to transport coffee trucks to ports as some loaded lorries have been stolen.

Coffee growers are also experiencing increased extortion.

“The new “roya” is called extortion,” he said. “ There is concern about violence in coffee-growing regions, especially extortion and the theft of coffee mules, which has led to the activation of security convoys,” he added.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.
