Colombia’s Coffee Exports to the US Totaled $848 million in January- July:AmCham

Coffee Network (Bogota) – Colombia has recorded exports of US$848.4 million of coffee in January-July, being the main supplier to the United States with a 17% share, according to figures from the U.S. Census Bureau.

According to the analysis of the Colombian American Chamber of Commerce, AmCham Colombia, based on Census data,  the most desired product by the United States is the unroasted or decaffeinated coffee that consolidated, between January and July of this year with  sales of US$ 771.8 million, representing 91% of the total. This is followed by unroasted decaffeinated coffee with transactions in the order of US$ 38 million and a 4.4% share; and non-decaffeinated roasted coffee for US$37.7 million.

“Despite the international situation of generally lower demand, Colombian coffee continues to be the favorite of Americans. Aside from the production challenges, this sector faces additional challenges such as competitiveness and generation transition, ensuring that coffee is produced efficiently and with added value increases its value and generates differentiation in that market and at a global level,” said María Claudia Lacouture, executive president of the Colombian American Chamber of Commerce, AmCham Colombia.

Where does it arrive and where does it come from?

The main states where Colombian coffee has landed, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, in the first seven months of this year are: New Jersey which US$ 175.7 million were sold until July; followed by Louisiana in the order of US$ 132.9 million; South Carolina worth $128.2 million; Texas and California, with transactions for US$82.4 million and US$62.8 million, respectively.

"In the analysis we carried out at AmCham Colombia we found that the East and South of the United States, framed in the main destinations, group 61% of what we sell to that country, which demonstrates the great opportunity that, in this product, We have to increase participation in the other states and consolidate ourselves even more in those mentioned, but, to achieve this, it is essential to catch up on all the challenges we have,” said the board.

The leading coffee-producing departments that export to the US are:

Antioquia with sales of US$ 190.8 million; Bogotá with US$ 122.2 million; Huila (US$101.8 million); Quindío (US$ 88.5 million); Caldas (US$ 79.7 million).

“In coffee, we must stop seeing the glass as half empty. The FTA with the United States  is a mechanism that works as a clear advantage to reach the largest market in the world. We have differentiation in flavors and varieties, what is required is joint work in which forces join to enhance their benefits. It is not about destroying what we are good at, it is about enhancing it and the trade agreement is the key to achieving it,” concluded Lacouture.

Colombia’s president Gustavo Petro has said the government evaluates amending the US_Colombia FTA.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 11

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.
