Colombia’s Coffee Production Falls 29% in March to 754,000 bags

Bogota (Coffee Network)- Coffee output in Colombia, the world's third- largest coffee producer, yielded 754,000 bags of 60-kg in March, down from 1.064 million bags in the same period last year, the coffee growers federation said early today.

March’s output level is lower than the 869,000 bags in February and 893,000 bags in January. This is the consecutive sixth month of falls on the year as the last time output grew on the year was in September, according to FNC figures.

In the 12-month period, Colombia produced 12.413 million bags, down 17% from the 14.993 million bags in the same period last year.

“The recent performance of coffee production reflects the impact of weather conditions on the availability of the bean, and reiterated the need to continue strengthening the productivity of coffee plantations to stabilize supply in the coming months,” FNC general manager Germán Bahamón said:

In the coffee year, Colombia produced 6.224 million bags, down 28% on the year. Colombia had produced 8.680 million bags in the same period last year.

In the first quarter, Colombia produced 2.516 million bags, down from 3.781 million bags last year.

Colombia has been pelted by torrential rains since September last year. The dry season January-March did not take place because of several cold fronts coming from the north that flooded several departments. This weather pattern has delayed the coffee flowering season, which will likely reduce output during the main harvest in September-December.

Exports Increase

In March, Colombia shipped 788,000 bags, down 37% from the 1.252 million in the same period last year.

In the 12-month period, Colombia exported 12.109 million bags, down 6% from the 12.925 million bags in the same period last year.

In the coffee year, Colombia exported 5.892 million bags, down 17% on the year. Colombia had produced 7.126 million bags in the same period last year.

In the first quarter, Colombia shipped 2.560 million bags, down from 3.589 million bags last year.

The National Coffee Fund controlled by FNC decreased its exports by 14% to224,000 bags, up from 143,000 bags in February which implies FNC is using inventory to ship some coffee.

Private exporters shipped 564,000 bags, down from 993,000 in the same month last year.

Colombia has shipped 12.533 million 60-kg bags worldwide in the last 12 months, representing a 1% decrease compared to the same period last year when it dispatched 12.678 million bags.

In the coffee year, Colombia shipped 5.892 million bags, down from 7.126 million bags in the same period last year.

In January-March, Colombia exported 2.560 million bags, down 29% on the year.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.
