Colombia’s Coffee Provinces Support Felipe Robayo To Head Coffee Growers Federation

Bogota (Coffee Network )- The Colombia’s coffee-producing provinces of Nariño and Cauca have given their support to candidate Felipe Robayo to lead the Colombian coffee growers federation (FNC), the departments said in letters sent to Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro.

The southern departments of Cauca and Nariño said they support Robayo, former commercial director of FNC, because he is a “great strategist” in coffee promotion in international markets.

Robayo is one of the three candidates, who have been rumored to be shortlisted to head the Colombia’s coffee growers federation.

Maria Claudia Lacouture, former minister of commerce and incumbent president of the US-Colombia chamber of commerce along with Robayo and Luis Enrique Dussan , governor of El Huila, have been heard to be part of the three shortlisted candidates to head FNC.

The National Committee of Growers must shortlist three candidates. One of them must have the express and favorable vote of the Minister of Finance. An extraordinary coffee summit must be carried out to choose the new FNC manager.

Coffee producing department whose production is higher than 9% of the country’s total output will have six votes during the polling session. Departments with coffee output below 3 and 9% will have three votes and those below 3% of output will have two votes.

Letters that Support Robayo

The Cauca department, which has 93,000 coffee growers, said they support Robayo because he was a great strategist in the “commercial policy of Colombian coffee” during the two years he was the commercial director of FNC.

“He can interpret the needs of coffee growers in a differential way, which hand in hand with his knowledge in the international markets… give us enough reasons to support him,” Jesus Hernan Noguera, president of the Cauca coffee committee said in a letter sent to Petro. Cauca contributes with 10.94% of Colombia's coffee output, becoming the fourth-largest coffee producing province.

The Nariño province said they have had the opportunity to work together with Robayo when he held the Commercial Management of the Federation between the years 2015 to 2017. “We believe that his professional suitability makes him the best candidate to head (FNC). His knowledge of the sector, his technical capacity and his impeccable ethical character makes him a unique candidate to lead the Federation,” Carlos Alberto Eraso, president of the Nariño coffee committee said in a separate letter to President Petro.

Robayo’s knowledge of the world coffee market allowed FNC’s exports to total 25% of the country’s total market share. Today the Federation's exports do not exceed 11%, “which compromises the most precious asset of coffee growers, the purchase guarantee,” Eraso said in the letter.

Felipe Robayo has raised the need to transform the Federation into an institution where the regions gain importance, advocating the decentralization of resources that gives greater dynamism to the regions.

“His proposal to put the Federation at the service of the government in the construction of the peace, has led him to expand the coffee border in areas where today grows  coca, seeking to link coca farmers in programs of supplementation of their income (not substitution),” adds the letter.

“We believe that the Federation under his guidance and working hand in hand with the government can contribute to effectively solving distributive problems by directing the coverage of programs that are executed with public money from the National Fund of Coffee to that 70% of coffee growers who produce only 30% of the coffee,” Eraso noted.

Nariño contributes with 4.50% of Colombia's total coffee output.

The coffee growers federation said the election day of the new FNC manager will be announced today, through an open call that will be published at www.federaciondecafeteros.org.

FNC Profile

The Minister of Finance and Public Credit, José Antonio Ocampo, highlighted yesterday the importance of acting in consensus. He said the next general manager must have extensive managerial experience, including knowledge in international trade.

“The manager must have high-level managerial experience, of least a decade in the public or private sector," said Ocampo, who added: “I want to be clear that I see no other way forward on this process but through consensus”.

"The general manager must unite, it is our responsibility, yours as coffee leaders and ours as a government, not to allow under any circumstances that

come back moments that did so much damage to the coffee growers, to the Federation,” he added.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
