Colombia’s Committee of Coffee Growers Federation Postpones Until Next Week Decision, Sources Said Meeting Scheduled to Wednesday

Bogota (Coffee Network )- The coffee committee of the coffee growers federation decided to postpone until next Wednesday the decision to choose the three shortlisted candidates to head the coffee growers federation as they could not agree on the names of their preference, people familiar with the situation said.

FNC said they will postpone until next week the decision to choose the three shortlisted candidates that will compete to head the coffee growers federation.

But two people with knowledge in the matter said the meeting will be held on Wednesday.

“Once the shortlist is defined, the National Committee will review the following stages of the schedule of the election process in order to guarantee that all the steps are fulfilled and the coffee growers can learn first-hand about the candidates and their proposals,” FNC said.

One coffee leader said the union opposes the inclusion of two women to the shortlisted candidates.

He added that the coalition of the coffee committees is too strong to succumb to the government’s wills.

The decision was also postponed as he Finance Minister must consult to the President Gustavo Petro about the list of the candidates.

The National Coffee Growers committee was meeting since 8:00 a.m. today and the meeting ended around 1:30 p.m. local time, a source at the finance ministry said. The coffee growers committee is comprised by the finance minister, the Agriculture Minister, the Commerce Minister and the manager of the regional coffee committees.

Of the three candidates, one must have the express and favorable vote of the Minister of Finance and one must be a woman.

Last week, the Colombian coffee committee shortlisted seven candidates including Carlos Felipe Robayo Duque, former commercial manager at FNC and   César Augusto Echeverry Castaño, former director of Tecnicafe, and current researcher at the International Center of Tropical Agriculture CIAT among seven pre-selected candidates to head FNC.

Another name that emerged was Luis Fernando Mejia, incumbent director of think tank Fedesarrollo and former director of the government’s national planning department.

Other names that were preselected are Germán Alberto Bahamón Jaramillo, the only candidate from the Huila province, and incumbent general manager of Apple.

Mauricio Velásquez García was also shortlisted and Santiago Pardo, who was FNC’s representative in Asia. Finally, Sandra Morelli,  a former legal director at the coffee growers federation, and former general country’s comptroller. Morelli was the legal director of the coffee growers federation during 12 years, was also shortlisted. Colombia is selecting a new general manager of the coffee growers federation after president Gustavo Petro requested the resignation of incumbent director Roberto Velez, who led the institution since 2015.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
