UPDATE: Colombia’s January Coffee Production Down 34% On The Year

Bogota (Coffee Network)- Colombia, the world's third largest producer, produced 893,000 bags of 60-kg in January, down 34% from the 1.356 million in the same month last year, the coffee growers federation said.

“The National Federation of Coffee Growers reiterates that this behavior reflects the sensitivity of coffee to climate shocks and the volatility of the international environment,” FNC said in a press release.

German Bahamon, general manager of the coffee growers federation said climate, exchange rates, and the volatility of international prices continue to put pressure on Colombian coffee farming, affecting the agro-economic pace at the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026.

In the coffee year, October-January, Colombia produced 4.6 million bags, down from 6.25 million bags, or 26% lower, the federation added.

Torrential rains since mid-2025 affected the flowering season for the country’s secondary crop, and rainfall in January 2026 is disrupted flowering, a critical stage for forecasting the size of the main harvest expected in the last quarter of the year, coffee growers said.

Excess rainfall has affected plantations in Huila, Antioquia and Cauca, the country’s first-, second- and fourth-largest coffee-producing departments. In Huila, some coffee-growing areas recorded up to 200 millimeters of rain in January 2026, according to growers.

In the 12-month period, Colombia produced 13.215 million bags, down 8% on the year.

In this context, the Coffee Price Stabilization Fund (FEPC) continues to be a fundamental instrument for protecting the income of coffee-growing families and mitigating the effects of volatility on the sector, FNC added.

Colombia produced 13.67 million bags in 2025, down from 13.997 million bags of 60-kg in the calendar year 2024, when it recorded the highest level since 2019 as a dry spell associated to El Niño induced increased flowerings leading to higher output.

Exports Falls

Colombia shipped 909,000 bags in January, down 21% on the year when it had exported 1.153 million bags.

Private exporters shipped 743,000 bags in January, down 22% on the year.

FNC shipped 166,000 bags, down 15% on the year.

Colombia exported 12.895 million bags in the 12-month period, up 3% on the year when it shipped 12.539 million bags, according to preliminary FNC figures.

In the 12-month period, private exporters shipped 10.224 million bags, unchanged on the year. FNC shipped 2.671 million bags, up 15% on the year.

In the coffee year, Colombia shipped 4.241 million bags, down 10% from the 4.690 million bags.

In the coffee year, Colombia shipped 4.241 million bags, down 10% on the year when it shipped 4.690 million bags.

Imports

Colombia imported a 1.348 million bags of 60-kn in February 2025-January 2026, FNC added.

Imports in January totaled 127,000 bags, up 368% from the 27,000 bags in the same month last year.

Inventory

Colombia held 1.102 million bags of coffee inventory in January, down from 1.180 million bags in December.  FNC had a total of 951,000 bags in January, down from 1.009 million bags in December. The balance 151,000 bags were held by private exporters, down from 171,000 bags in December.

Consumption

Colombians consumed 2.283 million bags of coffee in February 2025 and January 2026. In January 2026, coffee consumption was estimated at 189,000 bags, up 4.,2% on the year.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.
