Colombia’s president Ivan Duque Visits South Korea, Aims to Boost Coffee Sales

Bogota (Coffee Network)- Colombia’s President is visiting South Korea and his counterpart Moon Jae-In promised to increase purchases of Colombian coffee.

Colombia aims to export 1 million bags of 60-kg to South Korea in the near term, after having exported 540,000 bags in 2020, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism said. Colombia hopes to export US$200 million worth of coffee per year to the Asian nation. South Korea is one of those countries that pay high premiums to secure high-quality Colombian beans.

Colombia, the world's third-largest coffee exporting nation, expects to export around 12.5 million bags in 2021, and produce some 14 million bags.

In the framework of the state visit to South Korea, President Iván Duque highlighted the interest of the Asian nation in strengthening the relationship in trade and investment with Colombia, and announced an initial balance of investment for US $ 200 million.

During the meeting with his South Korean counterpart, Moon Ja-in, six agreements were signed that will lead to support in matters of public health, creative and cultural industries, and agriculture.

In addition, meetings were held with South Korean unions and businessmen, led by the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, María Ximena Lombana, the Colombian Embassy in South Korea and ProColombia, the investment office of the Colombian government.

Colombia also plans to continue exporting banana, which last year contributed with US $ 15 million in exports and take advantage of the sanitary admissibility for avocado, which has already registered its first exports to Korea for around 18 tons. In September there will be a new export of another 16 tons.

In the case of flowers, it seeks to take advantage of the elimination of tariffs after the fifth year of entry into force of the free trade agreement between the two countries.

During the agenda, a request was made to accelerate the admissibility processes for pork and Tahiti lemon, issues that were reviewed by the Minister of Agriculture, in a meeting with the South Korean health entity - APQA.

The Trade Agreement that the two countries have in force since 2016 has boosted exports of non-mining energy goods.

"Sales have grown 9% on average annually since 2016. But also, if we compare the end of 2016 when exports of non-mining goods totaled US $ 184.2 million with those of 2020 that closed at US $ 224.5 million, the increase is 21.8%. This visit, without a doubt, has made it possible to strengthen that commercial relationship, but it has also translated into a commitment to take better advantage of this Agreement, ”said Lombana.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 11

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.
