Colombia To Soon Begin Railing Coffee Along Central Railway

Bogota (Coffee Network)- Coffee exporters and the National Coffee Growers Federation (FNC) have yet to transport coffee via the rehabilitated Central Railway this year, as negotiations continue with the new concessionaire, said Javier Díaz, president of the Colombian Exporters Association (Analdex).

Earlier this year, Colombian coal company CNR, together with its partners Transferport and Spain’s Ortiz Construcciones y Proyectos, was awarded a 10-year, $545 million public-private partnership to operate, maintain, and modernize the Central Railway.

Between January and December 2024, a total of 561 tonnes of coffee were transported along the La Dorada–Chiriguaná route, managed by AlmaCafé, the logistics arm of the FNC, according to Colombia’s infrastructure agency ANI. However, no new shipments have taken place so far in 2025 as talks with the concessionaire continue, Díaz added.

“They are in negotiations with the new concessionaire to begin transporting coffee,” Díaz told reporters on the sidelines of the Coffee Exporters Association summit.

The 850 km rehabilitated Central Railway currently carries other types of cargo such as coal, but coffee shipments are expected to begin soon — a move that could help lower logistics costs and reduce emissions.

This latest concession marks the beginning of a new 10-year management period for the corridor. In the past, coffee shipments from central Colombia using rail have proven to improve efficiency and cut transportation costs.

The Central Railway, stretching roughly 805 km from central Colombia to the Caribbean port city of Santa Marta, could offer freight rates up to 15% lower than trucking, analysts have said.

With the renewed line, coffee from the provinces of Caldas, Tolima, Cundinamarca, Santander, and Huila stands to gain competitiveness, as lower freight rates would strengthen exporters’ cash flow, according to ANI.

The route begins in La Dorada (Caldas) and terminates at the port of Santa Marta. Coffee produced in Santander, Norte de Santander, and Cesar could also benefit, as a new train station has been built in Aguachica (Cesar), CNR’s president recently noted. Coffee from Antioquia, Cundinamarca, and other nearby regions may soon follow suit once rail services commence.

The Central Railway spans 25 municipalities across five provinces, and freight activity has grown sharply. ANI reported that the La Dorada–Chiriguaná line carried 796,000 tonnes of freight between January and September—three times the total volume transported in all of 2024.

The Central Railway will have several train stations across the line, the CNR president recently said. But one of the hurdles that the railway will have to overcome is fostering the arrival of more shipping lines docking in Santa Marta to load coffee.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.
