Fundamentals & Weather

The Nov contract extended gains on Tuesday as steady feedgas demand outweighed limited weather driven demand. Additional strength stemmed from  updated pointing to higher consumption ahead as well as expectations for a lower than normal injection.  Nov NG settled 3.6 cents higher at $3.303.

The NWS has revised its 6-10 day forecast, replacing expectations for below normal conditions in the with projections for near normal temps.   The eastern half of the US is forecast to remain well above normal with the NE showing the strongest probability for warmth. The 8-14 day outlook remains above to much above normal for the entire country.  Imelda became the 4th hurricane of the season yesterday but poses no threat to the US.

Storage data for the week ended Sep 26 is expected to show a build of 66 BCF,  well below the 5 yr avg build of 85 BCF but higher than last year’s 54 BCF injection.  If correct, stocks would reach 3.574 TCF.  The projection is also 9 BCF lower than the prior week’s build, underscoring tighter market conditions.

For the week in progress, stocks are projected to rise by 87 BCF, falling short of the 5 yr avg build of 94 BCF.  Based on current weather forecasts, total storage is on pace to exceed 3.75 TCF in early October and should surpass 3.9 TCF by the end of the month.

Current weather patterns remain neutral to bearish for near-term demand, with mild conditions limiting overall consumption. Power burn has eased to 36.7 BCF/day, down 2.6 BCF/day from Tuesday, as lower cooling demand weighs on gas fired generation. In contrast, res/comm demand has ticked higher, rising 1.8 BCF/day to 10.6 BCF/day, reflecting early-season heating needs in cooler regions.

LNG feedgas demand is softer this morning at 15.8 BCF/day, likely tied to ongoing maintenance.

Prices traded much higher overnight as a government shutdown threatens to disrupt Fed data releases and consumer spending.  The EIA has stated it will be operable for now.  The Nov contract is currently trading about 3 cents higher.

The November 25 natural gas contract has been steadily bid higher since Monday when it became the spot contract.

Over the past two sessions, the November contract has gained .097 (3%) closing Tuesday at 3.302.

Overnight buying has rallied the November contract up to 3.390-3.400 resistance.  A breakout above 3.400 will turn the open gap on the daily continuation chart from last July at 3.490-3.500 into the next upside objective.

60-minute chart trend following indexes are in the overbought area suggesting a near term pull back.

3.290-3.300 is the first area of support followed by weekly low support at 3.130.  Contract low support set last week for the November contract is at 3.055.

Bullish divergences on the November daily chart oscillators and bullish short and long term indexes on the daily continuation chart may indicate a post-summer seasonal low has been set.

Moving Average Alignment – Neutral-Bullish
Long Term Trend Following Index – Bullish
Short Term Trend Follow Following Index - Bullish

Relative Strength Index - 56.64

WTI and Brent Crude Are Now Reading the Strait of Hormuz Differently

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
