Fundamentals & weather

After briefly trading above $10 Tuesday, spot month gas prices pulled back in afternoon trading following reports that Freeport LNG has pushed back its target for partial restart from early to mid October to early to mid November.  They anticipate production to ramp up to a sustained level of at least 2 BCF/day by the end of November.  Full operations were delayed even longer and are now not expected to resume until Mar 2023.

Milder weather last week resulted in lower gas fired cooling demand, leaving more gas available for storage.  Platts projects this week’s storage report to show a build of 51 BCF for the week ended Aug 19.  A build this size would be 5 BCF above the 5 yr avg of 46 BCF and would be well above last year’s build of 32 BCF.

US gas prices are back up this morning even as European prices begin to settle down.   This morning’s support indicates yesterday’s selloff may have been overdone.

Moving forward, a longer period of below normal feedgas demand stemming from Freeport's delayed restart could help narrow the deficit.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
