Dry Spell Appears in Colombia’s Second-Largest Coffee Province,  Anticipated Delayed Second Harvest

Bogota (Coffee Network) - After torrential rains earlier this year, a dry spell has arrived at the Colombia’s second largest-coffee producing province of Antioquia at last, but the damage has been inflicted, coffee growers in the province.

The Andean nation's main coffee harvest in late 2025 may be hit by heavy rains early this year as growers already said they did not have enough sun for flowering after a higher-than-expected 2024 recovery.

Juan Alvaro Arboleda, a large coffee grower in the southeast of Antioquia, said it has rained throughout the year “In the past 15 days, we have had good sun. Yet, for coffee quality, the showers will allow the few coffees that will come out to be improved,” he told Coffee Network.

The country's coffee federation forecasts a production of 7.1 million bags for the second half of the year, according to the FNC’s general manager Germán Bahamón.

If the target is correct, it implies that Colombia will produce around 13.31 million bags in the calendar year 2025 as it produced 6.21 million bags in the first half of the year. That would be lower than the 13.997 million bags produced in 2024.

In the 12-month period ending in July, Colombia produced 14.604 million bags, up 18% from the 12.359 million bags in the same period last year.

Colombia picks its main harvest in the second half of the year, but coffee trees needed sunlight eight months prior to picking the harvest, which it did not happen. The water stress did not occur in January- February of 2025. As a result, Antioquia may likely pick half the beans it picked in the second half of 2024, Arboleda noted.

Delayed beans

The rainfall could likely postpone the main harvest which is usually picked in September-December, until January of next year, coffee analysts said.

In fact, rainfall delayed the main harvest of the first half of the year, and this behaviour could resemble in the second half of the year, analysts added.

Coffee output in Colombia, the world's third- largest coffee producer, yielded 1.373 million bags in July, up 19% from the same month last year, the coffee growers federation said this week. The rise of production in July happens as rains earlier this year displaced the harvest of the first half of the year to the second half of the year, FNC said.

“This behavior, anticipated by the FNC, is due to the delay in the appearance of the main harvest of the first half of the year, caused by an atypical weather pattern marked by persistent rains throughout the first half of the year. This alteration shifted the harvest to the second half of the year, registering a higher coffee flow in this month,” FNC said.

FNC had recently said the climate in 2025 poses two significant challenges: first, the delay and lag in the southern harvest; and second, and of greater concern, the impact it will have on the main harvest in the second half of the year due to the poor flowering observed in February, the federation said.

Some 100 coffee hectares were destroyed in Colombia’s largest coffee-producing province of Huila in June as the river Suaza overflooded coffee trees.

To increase output, the coffee federation also seeks to renovate 100,000 hectares of aging trees and the replace them.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.
