Exportações de Café de Honduras Aumentam Enquanto País se Prepara para os Desafios do EUDR

 

CoffeeNetwork (Nova Iorque) – Honduras pode ser um dos países mais negativamente impactados pela iminente Regulamentação de Desmatamento da União Europeia (EUDR).

A EUDR, que, até o momento da redação, ainda deve entrar em vigor em 31 de dezembro de 2024, exigirá que os produtores de café do país centro-americano comprovem que seu café foi cultivado em terras que não foram desmatadas após 2020. De acordo com uma pesquisa realizada pelo Banco Mundial, que sobrepôs mapas de monitoramento florestal e produção de café, conclui-se que, da área total de perda de floresta em Honduras desde 2000, 12,3% estavam localizadas em áreas de cultivo de café. "Estimativas similares sugerem que apenas uma minoria das áreas de colheita de café pode não estar em conformidade com a EUDR", observa o relatório.

Em Honduras, dos 97.000 produtores registrados, aproximadamente 78% são pequenos cafeicultores com menos de 3,6 hectares, representando cerca de 37% da área cultivada total e 33% da produção, mostram dados da Associação de Exportadores de Café de Honduras (ADECAFEH).

"Apesar de seu objetivo louvável, até hoje a EUDR corre o risco de excluir do mercado da UE agricultores pobres e mal equipados, que não têm meios para documentar seu status livre de desmatamento", disse o Banco Mundial.

Em um esforço para ajudar os produtores a se adequarem, no início deste ano, a JDE Peet’s e a Enveritas firmaram um acordo para verificar se a indústria do café de Honduras não exporta café cultivado em terras desmatadas após 2020, conforme exigido pela nova Regulamentação de Desmatamento da União Europeia (EUDR).

O acordo foi assinado pela Secretária de Agricultura e Pecuária de Honduras, Dra. Laura Elena Suazo Torres, pelo Presidente do Instituto Hondurenho do Café, Pedro Mendoza Flores, pelo Vice-Presidente de Sustentabilidade da JDE Peet’s, Dr. Laurent Sagarra, e pelo CEO da Enveritas, David Browning.

A Enveritas adotou um processo tecnológico para avaliar todas as regiões cafeeiras de Honduras por meio de uma combinação de imagens de satélite de alta resolução, aprendizado de máquina e equipes em campo. A JDE Peet’s trabalhará com os agricultores e parceiros locais para auxiliar na reforestação das terras.

Cerca de metade (53-55%) de todo o café de Honduras é enviado para a UE. As exportações de café representam aproximadamente 5% do PIB nacional (30% do PIB agrícola).

Em uma entrevista hoje com a CoffeeNetwork, o Presidente da ADECAFEH, Miguel Pon, disse que as exportações para a safra 2024-2025 devem girar em torno de 5 milhões de sacas, representando um aumento de 7%. No entanto, outras estimativas do setor, menos conservadoras, preveem exportações de até 5,4 milhões de sacas. O aumento nas exportações tem pouco a ver com uma demanda melhor e pode ser atribuído, principalmente, a uma maior produção. "A demanda tem sido lenta, particularmente da Europa, mas aumentou nos últimos dias", diz Pon à CoffeeNetwork. "Temos sido mais cautelosos devido à regulamentação do EUDR, mas esperamos um aumento na atividade comercial após as mudanças na regulamentação."

Pon não espera atrasos na colheita. "Algumas regiões, particularmente em altitudes mais baixas, já começaram a colheita", disse Pon. A temporada de colheita máxima começará em meados de dezembro.

A ADECAFEH está considerando realizar novamente o Jantar do Café no próximo ano (em novembro). Outras iniciativas, como a cúpula PRF, também ocorrerão no próximo ano em Honduras. Esta semana, o instituto do café do país, IHCafe, anunciou que realizará uma nova feira nacional de comércio de café chamada Cafexpo em San Pedro Sula, em março de 2025.
