Luckin Coffee, China's Coffee Giant, Is Betting on the Next Wave of Global Demand

CoffeeNetwork (New York) – When Luckin Coffee announced the opening of its 100th store in Singapore this week, the milestone appeared modest compared with the company's vast network in China. Yet behind the celebration lies a much bigger story for the global coffee industry: one of the world's fastest-growing coffee chains is positioning itself at the center of what could become the next major engine of coffee consumption growth.

The opening of the 100th Singapore outlet marks just three years since Luckin entered its first overseas market. Today, the company says it has become Singapore's second-largest coffee chain by store count and has attracted more than 1.9 million cumulative transacting customers in the city-state. Company executives have described Singapore as a key benchmark for global expansion and proof that Luckin's digital-first retail model can travel beyond China.

For coffee producers and traders, however, the significance extends far beyond a single market. Luckin's rapid expansion highlights a broader shift taking place across Asia, where coffee consumption is growing from relatively low levels and creating new demand opportunities at a time when global supply is projected to increase substantially.

While international expansion has generated headlines, Luckin remains overwhelmingly a China story. The company reported 36,310 stores globally at the end of the second quarter of 2026 and added 2,714 net new stores during the quarter. Of those openings, 2,668 were located in China, compared with just 31 in Malaysia, seven in Singapore and eight in the United States. Average monthly transacting customers reached a record 112.7 million.

Those figures underscore where management sees its largest opportunity. Despite becoming China's dominant coffee chain by store count, Luckin continues to expand aggressively because the country's coffee market remains far less developed than those of Japan, South Korea, Europe or North America.

According to a January 2026 report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service, China's coffee consumption exceeded 360,000 metric tons in 2024, equivalent to roughly 6 million 60-kilogram bags. That represents an increase of more than 150% over the past decade and places China among the fastest-growing coffee markets in the world. The report estimated that per-capita coffee consumption had reached approximately 22 cups annually, still well below more mature consuming markets.

The contrast becomes even more striking in major urban centers. A separate USDA report noted that Shanghai alone had more than 10,300 coffee shops in 2025, with annual per-capita coffee consumption reaching 106 cups, nearly five times the national average.

Those numbers help explain why Luckin's strategy differs from that of many traditional coffee chains. Rather than focusing primarily on stealing market share from rivals, the company appears intent on expanding the overall coffee-drinking population.

A key element of that strategy has been product diversification. In recent years, Luckin has launched a growing range of tea beverages, fruit drinks and hybrid products aimed at consumers who may not already be regular coffee drinkers. By 2026, several of the company's highest-selling beverages were non-coffee items, a reflection of its efforts to attract customers from China's much larger tea-drinking culture.

Beyond China, Southeast Asia is emerging as Luckin's preferred international growth corridor. The company selected Singapore as its first overseas market in 2023 and has repeatedly described the city-state as a regional hub for future expansion. Luckin has introduced more than 130 localized products in Singapore, including beverages inspired by regional flavors such as pandan, Milo and brown sugar. Two of its signature drinks, Coconut Latte and Little Butter Latte, have each surpassed two million cups in cumulative local sales.

Malaysia appears to be the next major target. The company already operates more than 150 outlets there and continues expanding. Industry observers view Malaysia as particularly attractive because of its young population, growing middle class and increasing adoption of digital ordering and cashless payments.

The broader regional opportunity may be even more significant. According to industry forecasts cited by China Daily, the specialist coffee and tea shop segment is expected to grow at compound annual rates of 12% in China, 9% in Singapore and 13% in Malaysia between 2026 and 2030, well above projected global growth rates.

For coffee-producing countries, these trends are increasingly important. Global demand growth has traditionally been associated with mature consuming markets in Europe and North America. While those regions remain critical, future expansion may increasingly come from Asian consumers who are adopting coffee as part of daily life.

That shift comes at a pivotal moment for the industry. The International Coffee Organization recently projected global coffee production of 183.6 million bags in 2025/26 against consumption of 180.6 million bags, resulting in the first market surplus after several years of deficits. At the same time, Asia and Oceania now account for nearly 28% of global coffee consumption, making the region second only to Europe among consuming markets.

Singapore itself remains relatively small in volume terms, with annual coffee consumption estimated around 15,000 metric tons, or roughly 250,000 bags. Yet its influence extends well beyond its size because of its role as a regional business, logistics and consumer trends hub.

The opening of Luckin's 100th Singapore store therefore offers a glimpse into a larger transformation underway across Asia. China already consumes roughly 6 million bags of coffee annually and continues to post double-digit growth. Southeast Asian markets are developing rapidly, supported by rising incomes, urbanization and changing consumer habits.

For the global coffee sector, the message is becoming increasingly clear: the next generation of coffee demand may not be driven by traditional consuming nations alone. As companies like Luckin Coffee expand across China and Southeast Asia, they are helping create millions of new coffee drinkers, potentially reshaping consumption patterns and supporting demand growth for years to come.
