November 14 – Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller yesterday said that the central bank “may consider slowing the pace of rate increases” at their next meeting, reiterating that “softening” is the wrong way of thinking about it, but instead focusing on the endpoint of potential rate hikes. This was in response to a series of questions on monetary policy at an economic conference in Australia. Waller said that the 7.7% annualized inflation number was still “enormous” and reinforced the need to continue to bring that number down and rates up until inflation is controlled, with monetary tightening far from over. His comments did shake up conventional thinking about three-quarter-point rises going forward (the next FOMC meeting is in mid-December). Economic data remains thin this morning as well, leaving last week’s CPI number as the elephant in the room. Manufacturing and PPI data is on tap early tomorrow morning.

British Finance minister Jeremy Hunt will announce his U.K. budget plan on Thursday and comments over the weekend indicated he would come out with tax increases and spending cuts, in an attempt to restore government credibility amid financial market chaos and fix a gaping hole in Britain’s budget. Inflation in the Kingdom is hovering in the 10% range and officials there seem much less willing to wage the war that the U.S. Fed is currently doing, with a shakier overall economic situation hovering there really since Brexit.

Dow Jones futures are pointing to some profit-taking this morning after a massive week last week, with the NASDAQ trying to follow up its best weekly gain since March as well, and the S&P on the heels of its best week since June. Cryptocurrencies are in shambles at this point with the collapse of FTX and revelations of improprieties ongoing; Bitcoin at least held on Friday and remains close to the $17,000 mark, up from a two-year low of $15,554 on Wednesday. Elections remain up in the air to start the week as well, with Democrats retaining control of the Senate after winning at least 50 seats (potentially 51 after a Georgia run-off) while Republicans are still favored to take control of the house. A nice evenly-split gridlock is the best case scenario for the equities market and it appears that’s what we will have for at least the next two years, regardless of the remaining results.

Commodities are mostly facing headwinds from a dollar rebound, though losses are moderating into the morning hours. Soybeans are holding in decently given oil strength and a tight ongoing S&D, while wheat still has the Black Sea deadline (still coming up Saturday) to ponder, but it’s corn (Dec corn chart below) that has sneakily underperformed as of late. The USDA increased yields and production last week and won’t move them again until January…ethanol and feed usage rates are doing ok…but it’s the export side of the demand sector that has the bulls concerned heading into the winter months. U.S. values are overpriced globally, partially due to/combined with low river levels of late to slow movement, and export indicators are showing real issues vs USDA expectations.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 5

August 5 – U.S. equities markets are on fire this week, with both the Dow Jones and S&P 500 setting new all-time highs yesterday with futures indicating further gains again today; the marketplace remains optimistic over a deal with Iran despite no evidence of such as of yet. Crude oil is working on a lower high and low today but remains slightly on the high side on the session, while the dollar is retreating back towards Monday’s nearly two-month low. The ten-year note is steady-to-lower this morning (though solidly lower so far this month) at 4.605%, while the VIX index continues to rebound into mid-week at almost a 17-point reading this morning.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 4

August 4 – The benchmark Dow Jones Industrial Average surged into the close yesterday to finish almost 700 points higher, at a record close of 53,178 points – easily clearing the previous top from almost a month ago. The S&P 500 is on the brink of its own record as well, while the NASDAQ index is short of June highs but working on a strong three-session rally. All three are pointing to positive openings today. Palantir (a U.S. software company) reported better-than-expected earnings yesterday afternoon post-close to boost the tech sector, though a host of other firms reported strong earnings as well. The ten-year note continues to retreat from Friday’s high, now at 4.67%, with the dollar on the high side of level-par, while the VIX index now under 16 shows reduced volatility.

Perspective: Mid-Day Commentary for August 3

August 3 – The Dow Jones is up over 500 points as of the time of this writing, right in the range of the record high close just under a month ago; the marketplace at least appreciates the rhetoric from Trump calling for negotiations, and WTI crude oil dropping by around $5/bbl. The S&P and NASDAQ are also up 1% or better on the session, while treasury yields suffer chop lower on the day, with the ten-year note down slightly at 4.69% at this time.
